Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of human life.
Description of the Activity
The position is located at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Department of Mathematics. The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is a joint institution for Lund Institute of Technology (LTH) and the Faculty of Science at Lund University, bringing together all mathematical activities. The Department of Mathematics (N) brings together leading experts in areas such as partial differential equations, operator theory and complex analysis, harmonic analysis and applications, inverse problems, differential geometry, computational mathematics, and algebra. We place great emphasis on a good and collegial work environment. The institution is international with a relatively even gender distribution among staff.
Being a PhD Student
As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a doctoral student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in thinking critically and analytically, solving problems independently using appropriate methods, and developing an awareness of research ethics. Additionally, as a PhD student, you are given the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you are guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree.
More about being a PhD student at the Faculty of Science at naturvetenskap.se (https://naturvetenskap.se).
Subject and Project Description
The research will focus on non-linear partial differential equations within fluid mechanics and wave motion. The position is partially funded by the Crafoord Foundation and concerns stationary solutions to Euler's equations with applications to water waves with vorticity. The construction and analysis of such solutions involve methods from non-linear functional analysis and dynamical systems. The research consists mainly of mathematical analysis, but some numerical calculations may be included if the applicant wishes. There is also the possibility to work with related areas such as thin-film equations and non-linear non-local dispersive equations together with other researchers at the department.
Job Responsibilities
The main task for a PhD student is to engage in doctoral studies, which means you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a PhD student, you will be part of a growing research group within an active research environment. In addition to working on the project, you will have the opportunity to participate in seminars and conferences and devote part of your time to doctoral studies. You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which largely consists of writing a doctoral dissertation.
The duties may also include teaching and other departmental tasks (maximum 20%).
Qualifications
To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below.
Admission Requirements
You meet the basic requirements for education at the doctoral level if you have:
- completed an advanced level degree or
- fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level or
- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way
The special admission requirements for admission to doctoral education in mathematics are:
- completed courses in mathematics equivalent to at least 120 higher education credits, of which 50 higher education credits must be at an advanced level (master's level)
- the courses at the basic and advanced level must include a thesis equivalent to at least 30 higher education credits
- special eligibility can also be obtained through equivalent studies; this is assessed in each individual case
- knowledge and skills in mathematical analysis
- ability to work independently and formulate and handle research problems
- good written and oral communication skills
- very good knowledge of English in speech and writing
Selection Criteria
The selection among eligible applicants will be made with regard to the ability to benefit from the education based on the following criteria:
- preference is given to applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the last application day
- knowledge of partial differential equations and functional analysis
- experience working with models within fluid mechanics is a strong merit
Great importance will be attached to how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability required to complete the doctoral education.
Consideration will also be given to good teamwork skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and skills, is assessed to have the abilities required to successfully complete education at the doctoral level.
What We Offer
Lund University is a government agency, which means you receive special benefits, generous vacation time, and a favorable occupational pension. As a PhD student at Lund University, you are both admitted as a student and employed, which provides several benefits. More about working at Lund University at lu.se (https://lu.se).
