We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in rhetoric with a focus on textbook studies from a cross-cultural perspective. The position is aimed at you who have a background in rhetoric or another relevant discipline that includes knowledge of rhetoric in theory and practice, e.g., language subjects, media and communication science, didactics and/or pedagogy.

Subject Environment

The research environment in Rhetoric at SOL emphasizes the historical impact and potential of classical rhetoric. This includes research projects that critically and constructively examine communicative challenges and opportunities in today's society. A central research focus is rhetoric's educational tradition, argumentation in theory and practice, in situ rhetoric, textbook studies, and democratic education. The research is conducted using qualitative and exploratory methods such as text studies and action research.

Duties and Responsibilities

You apply for the position with a proposal for a research project that clearly contributes to illuminating the place of rhetoric in modern textbooks from a cross-cultural perspective. The project can preferably focus on handbooks in practical rhetoric in different cultural contexts or on school textbooks in different cultural contexts. Your research project can also relate to other arenas for rhetoric education, e.g., within law, various forms of activities outside the school environment, and informal learning situations outside established educational institutions. We welcome proposals where selected classical rhetorical concepts (e.g., techne, dunamis, ethopoeia, controversia) play a central role, as well as proposals involving a research design that includes so-called mixed methods.

You will work on your own proposed project in collaboration with colleagues in rhetoric and adjacent subjects. You will be assigned a mentor and also offered support for your continued academic career.

In addition to your own research project, you will work on organizing seminars and building various networks. Together with your colleagues in rhetoric and adjacent subjects, you will establish contacts and build national and international scientific collaborations.

You are expected to participate in the research environment through active participation in seminars and other research-related activities. The duties require regular presence at the workplace.

Within the framework of the employment, you are expected to write equivalent to at least two peer-reviewed scientific articles or one peer-reviewed scientific monograph.

The position is intended as an initial step in the career and as an opportunity for you to further deepen and broaden your research competence. The position also includes some pedagogical merit. Teaching, supervision, and other teaching-related tasks may occur within the framework of the employment, but to no more than one-fifth of the working time.

Qualifications

The assessment will primarily be based on your scientific merits and potential as a researcher. Special weight will be attached to scientific ability within the subject area.

Requirements for the position are:

  • a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree in rhetoric or another adjacent discipline that includes knowledge of rhetoric in theory and practice, e.g., language subjects, media and communication science, didactics and/or pedagogy. The doctoral degree must be completed no later than the time when the employment decision is made, and you as an applicant need to complete your application with documentation proving the completed doctoral degree before this time
  • good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research
  • pedagogical ability
  • that you have not previously been employed as a postdoc supported by the current collective agreement for more than one year within the same or adjacent subject area at Lund University
  • good ability to write and speak English and sufficient knowledge of languages relevant to your own proposed research project

Merits for the position are:

  • completed doctoral degree no more than three years before the last application day. If there are special reasons such as illness, parental leave, union trust positions, service in total defense, or service/duties relevant to the subject area, this time can be deducted from the time elapsed since the completed doctoral degree
  • documented experience of research relevant to the direction of the position
  • documented experience of working in research projects
  • documented experience of participating in interdisciplinary and international research collaborations

Conditions

The employment is limited to a maximum of 3 years and refers to full-time according to Agreement on limited employment as a postdoc.

For questions about duties and responsibilities, please refer to Professor Christina Matthiesen, and for questions about employment conditions, please refer to Section Head Arthur Holmer (see contact details below). Questions will be answered before July 20 or after August 9 due to vacation.
