University of Gävle is one of Sweden's most popular universities. We offer around 60 degree programs and 330 standalone courses within the humanities, healthcare and medicine, social and natural sciences, as well as engineering. We have 19,000 students, 750 employees, and a unified campus in beautiful surroundings.

The university has four strategic research areas focusing on societal challenges: Sustainable urban development, health-promoting work, innovative learning, and intelligent industry.

Since 2023, the University has been part of the European University EU GREEN, which works to strengthen the quality of higher education in the EU and increase exchange for both students and staff.

The university's vision is The first choice for everyone who wants to make a difference.

We offer among other things:

  • Good working environment: employee surveys show high satisfaction and joy of work
  • Generous wellness allowance, among the best in Sweden's higher education institutions
  • Flexible working methods

The research area of health-promoting working life focuses on various health aspects of work life from a physical, psychological, and social perspective. The research aims to contribute to knowledge about health-promoting working life and/or causal explanations for the emergence of work-related ill health, how it can be prevented and treated. Leadership and employee well-being are also addressed, as well as return-to-work possibilities for people with long-term ill health.

The Academy of Health and Working Life, Department of Occupational Health, Psychology and Sports Science at the University of Gävle hereby announces a doctoral education place (240 higher education credits) with a doctoral degree as the final goal. The doctoral student will become involved in the doctoral school Change - co-creating a sustainable working life, which is developed in collaboration between the University of Gävle and Region Gävleborg. The doctoral student will be linked to the examination area Health-promoting Working Life and admitted to the doctoral education subject Occupational Health Science. Within the research environment, doctoral students within the doctoral education subjects of nursing science, industrial economics, and social work will also be involved.

You are welcome to apply for this education place:

Organizational conditions for healthy flexible working forms and innovation capacity in small and medium-sized enterprises: Co-creation, implementation, and evaluation.

Tasks

The doctoral candidate shall primarily engage in conducting scientific projects and taking courses of at least 60 higher education credits. The education also includes writing a scientific compilation thesis equivalent to 180 higher education credits. The doctoral candidate may, to a limited extent, also work with teaching and administrative tasks. Such service extends the education time correspondingly. Such work may, before the doctoral degree is conferred, not exceed 20 percent of full working time. The doctoral candidate is expected to perform the absolute majority of their work in Gävle and regularly participate in the academy's activities.

The overall purpose of the doctoral project is to investigate how organizational conditions for flexible working forms look and can strengthen employees' occupational health and companies' innovation capacity, as well as how a framework for co-creating, implementing, and evaluating measures in SMEs can be developed. The doctoral project will be carried out within the framework of the ERUF project Flexible transition for sustainable innovation. In this, small and medium-sized enterprises are followed as they implement business-adapted changes to develop and maintain flexible working forms that balance the individual's needs and conditions with the work group's interaction and the company's goals. The doctoral project will consist of four sub-studies. The main supervisor for the doctoral project is Eva Bergsten.

Qualifications

To be admitted to doctoral education, basic eligibility according to the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 7, § 39) is required, which means:

  • A degree at advanced level (master's degree) or equivalent
  • At least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level, or equivalent knowledge

The eligibility must have been achieved no later than the same date as the last application day.

The tasks require a well-developed ability to work independently and together with others in teams, as well as good communication skills in Swedish and English, both written and oral. As a doctoral student, you should have a desire to seek new knowledge and also be able to discuss and explain the research with people who are not active within your own subject, both nationally and internationally. For this doctoral education place, experience with both qualitative and quantitative methods is particularly meritorious.

Selection is made based on a combined assessment of the applicant's ability to benefit from the education.
