The university has four strategic research areas focusing on societal challenges: Sustainable urban development, health-promoting work, innovative learning, and intelligent industry.
Since 2023, the University has been part of the European University Alliance EU GREEN, which works to strengthen the quality of higher education in the EU and increase exchange for both students and staff.
The University's vision is The first choice for everyone who wants to make a difference.
We offer, among other things:
- Good working environment: employee surveys show high satisfaction and joy of work
- Generous wellness allowance, among the highest among Swedish universities
- Flexible working methods
The research area of health-promoting working life focuses on different health aspects of working life from a physical, psychological, and social perspective. The research aims to contribute to knowledge about health-promoting working life and/or causal explanations for the emergence of work-related ill health, how it can be prevented and treated. Leadership and employee well-being are addressed, as well as return-to-work possibilities for individuals with long-term ill health.
The Academy of Health and Care Sciences, Department of Occupational Health, Psychology and Sports Science at the University of Gävle hereby announces a PhD position (240 higher education credits) with a doctoral degree as the final goal. The doctoral student will participate in the doctoral school Change – co-creating a sustainable working life, developed in collaboration between the University of Gävle and Region Gävleborg. The doctoral student will be linked to the degree-granting area Health-promoting Working Life and admitted to the PhD subject of Occupational Health Science. Within the research environment, doctoral students from the subjects of Nursing Science, Industrial Economics, and Social Work will also be involved.
You are welcome to apply for this PhD position:
Flexible work arrangements for health, innovative climate, and organizational learning in small and medium-sized enterprises
Tasks
The doctoral student shall primarily engage in conducting scientific projects and taking courses totaling at least 60 higher education credits. The education also includes writing a scientific compilation thesis equivalent to 180 higher education credits. The doctoral student may, to a limited extent, also work with teaching and administrative tasks. Such service extends the study period correspondingly. Such work, before the doctoral degree is conferred, must not exceed 20 percent of full-time employment. The doctoral student is expected to perform the vast majority of their work in Gävle and regularly participate in the academy's activities.
The overall purpose of the doctoral project is to investigate how flexible work arrangements can be organized in small and medium-sized enterprises, and how this contributes to the development of an innovative climate and organizational learning. The doctoral project will be conducted within the framework of the ERUF project Flexible Transition for Sustainable Innovation. In this project, small and medium-sized enterprises are followed as they implement business-adapted changes to develop and maintain flexible work arrangements that balance the individual's needs and conditions with the work group's interaction and the company's goals. The doctoral project will consist of four sub-studies. The main supervisor for the doctoral project is Marina Heiden.

Selection is made based on a combined assessment of the applicant's ability to benefit from the education.
