Job Description

The Department of Building Technology, Energy Systems and Environmental Science at the University of Gävle is seeking a PhD student to conduct scientific research on sustainable concrete for construction. In Sweden today, the construction industry accounts for a very large portion of energy consumption. Energy is used in three stages during a building's lifetime; the construction phase, the use phase, and the end-of-life phase. The overall goal of the project is to improve the competitive advantages of sustainable concrete through technical methods and reduced carbon dioxide emissions during the lifecycle, thereby contributing to a greener and more sustainable society.

Field of doctoral studies: Energy Systems

Project Description

The project will focus on the construction and environmental aspects of sustainable concrete. The research will be carried out through experimental and analytical studies. The PhD student is expected to write a doctoral thesis equivalent to 180 higher education credits and publish high-quality articles in international journals. The total duration of the PhD position is five years, taking into account 20% of the time for teaching.

The PhD position includes:

• carrying out the scientific project
• completing courses equivalent to at least 60 credits
• teaching and carrying out administrative work
• regularly participating in academic activities such as seminars and meetings

The duties include some teaching in undergraduate and advanced level courses. Some administrative tasks may also occur. The employment is full-time for up to five years, and the workplace is in Gävle.

Qualifications

To be admitted to the doctoral studies, the applicant must meet both basic and specific eligibility requirements (The Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, § 35).

Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed an advanced level degree, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or who in some other way within or outside the country have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.

Specific eligibility to be admitted to doctoral studies in energy systems (the field of doctoral studies) is held by those who have completed an advanced level degree in energy systems, building technology, or another direction that the employer finds equivalent. Eligibility is also held by those who have another advanced level degree, with at least 60 higher education credits in a relevant area for the doctoral studies.

To succeed in your PhD studies at the University of Gävle, we want you to have the ability to:

Furthermore, it is a requirement that you have a good ability to express yourself in both Swedish and English, both orally and in writing.

For the position, it is meritorious if you have experience of laboratory work, analytical methods, and writing scientific publications.

To be admitted to the doctoral studies, the applicant must be assessed as having the ability to benefit from the education (The Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, § 35). Conditions

After admission to doctoral studies, an employment as a PhD student will be offered (The Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, § 3). The employment is a fixed-term full-time employment (first one year, which can then be extended by up to two years at a time).

The total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral studies for four years. An employed PhD student may, to a limited extent (max 20%), perform certain tasks within e.g., education and administration.
