Project Description
Doctoral Subject: Energy Systems
This PhD project will develop new methods for planning electrification systems that remain reliable under climate-related risks such as floods, droughts, extreme heat, storms, and wildfires. The project aims to integrate considerations of climate risks and resilience into energy planning models and apply these to policy and planning issues.
The project is located within the Department of Energy Systems and will involve collaboration with external partners, including the University of Oxford as well as actors within national governments and energy organizations.
Supervision: Prof. Viktoria Martin and Dr. Daniel Adshead are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Final decisions are made upon admission.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- completed an advanced level degree, or
- fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or
- acquired in other ways, within or outside the country, knowledge essentially equivalent to the above.
The candidate's previous degree, or equivalent knowledge, should be in a relevant field such as energy systems, civil engineering or environmental technology, climate science, applied mathematics, or economic geography.
Personal Qualities
Since the project involves international collaboration, stakeholder-oriented case studies, and open-source research results, good communication skills, the ability to work independently, analytical problem-solving skills, and a collaborative work approach are important personal qualities.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.
Selection
To succeed in your PhD studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:
- independently drive their work forward,
- collaborate with others,
- have a professional attitude, and
- analyze and work with complex issues.
- documented knowledge or experience of climate modeling and datasets for climate risks;
- experience with modeling using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and handling spatial data, including tools such as QGIS or ArcGIS;
- knowledge or experience of network analysis, system-level risk analysis, or analysis of infrastructure dependencies;
- competence in programming and reproducible analysis, especially in Python;
- Experience with climate adaptation assessment and investment analysis.
After meeting the eligibility requirements, great weight will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment
Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain work tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
