Doctoral Field: Applied Mathematics and Computational Mathematics

The project focuses on applying optimal transport and gradient flows to machine learning and optimization problems, such as deep generative models, sampling, inference, stochastic optimization, and related applications. The doctoral student will develop and analyze mathematical models and algorithms that connect partial (and/or stochastic) differential equations, infinite-dimensional optimization, and statistical machine learning. The goal is to build a theoretical and computational foundation for new methods in statistical inference and generative models, based on principled theory for optimal transport and gradient flows.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in mathematics, applied mathematics, or related fields, and with an interest in both theory and applications.

The doctoral student will be placed at the Department of Mathematics, School of Engineering Sciences (SCI), KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and will become part of a dynamic research environment with close collaboration with other researchers in the field.

Supervision: Jia-Jie Zhu is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decision is made upon admission.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed a degree at an advanced level, or
• fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
• acquired in other ways, within or outside the country, knowledge essentially equivalent to the above.
• A master's degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, optimization, statistics, machine learning, or a closely related field, with a solid background in analysis, differential equations, and/or optimization.
• Documented knowledge of mathematical reasoning and programming (e.g., Python) relevant to computational mathematics and machine learning is required.
• Experience in one or more of the following areas is considered meritorious: optimal transport, PDEs, stochastic analysis, or theory of generative models, statistical inference, and/or sampling.

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

• independently drive their work forward,
• collaborate with others,
• have a professional attitude, and
• analyze and work with complex issues.
• Experience in programming and numerical simulation is meritorious.
• Good communication skills in English and the ability to work both independently and in a team for daily work.
• Experience working in an international research environment.

After meeting the eligibility requirements, great weight will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
