Doctoral Subject: Engineering Mechanics

The position is linked to the Swedish Research Council's project ARTEMIS: physics-guided inverse modeling of tunable architected materials for sound and vibration control at subwavelength scales.

The project aims to develop physics-based computational methods for the design, modeling, and analysis of tunable architected materials that can control sound and vibrations at scales smaller than the wavelength. The work may include numerical modeling of coupled acoustic and structural dynamic systems, inverse modeling, optimization, and analysis of acoustic materials or metamaterials.

The doctoral student/licentiate will be part of the "Sound and Vibrations" research environment at the Marcus Wallenberg Laboratory for Sound and Vibration Research, Department of Mechanics, KTH. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with Romain Rumpler and the surrounding research group.

Supervision: Romain Rumpler is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. The final decision is made upon admission.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed an advanced level degree, or
• fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
• acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
• The applicant must have knowledge equivalent to at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level within engineering mechanics, technical physics, or another subject relevant to sound and vibrations.

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English proficiency equivalent to English B/6.

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

• maintain a professional attitude, and
• analyze and work with complex issues.

It is meritorious if the applicant has knowledge of or experience in one or more of the following areas: acoustics, vibrations, structural dynamics, engineering mechanics, or acoustic metamaterials. Experience in scientific programming or computational tools such as Python, MATLAB, COMSOL Multiphysics, or equivalent is also meritorious.

After meeting the eligibility requirements, great weight will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral students. The total period of employment may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for at most one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for at most two years at a time. For studies to be concluded with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over two years.
