Project Description
PhD Subject: Energy and Environmental Systems, Energy Technology
The pilot and demonstration project "Energy Transition through Efficient Optimization of Local Energy Resources", funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, is a comprehensive system demonstration and scaling initiative.
The project demonstrates how energy communities can optimize local energy resources (solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, and electric vehicles) through energy management and assesses its impact on the power grid. The goal is to deliver real benefits at the system level: efficient energy sharing, flexibility services, reduced need for grid reinforcement, and broad replication of scalable, fair energy community solutions.
The PhD student at KTH will play a central role in the technical and system-level work, focusing on the development and calibration of digital twins, advanced modeling and optimization of local energy systems, with a focus on energy communities, techno-economic analysis, grid impact studies, and scenario modeling for large-scale replication.
Supervision: The PhD student will be supervised by Dr. Jagruti Thakur, Prof. Björn Laumert, and Dr. Patrik Ollas (RISE). The final decision on supervisors is made upon admission.
Admission Requirements

- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
Completed courses or course modules within energy systems and optimization methods are required in accordance with the eligibility requirements for the current doctoral education. Specific knowledge in data analysis, analysis of electrical and thermal networks, and Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is meritorious.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.
