Doctoral Subject: Computer Science

We welcome applications from talented and highly motivated candidates to pursue a PhD in Machine Learning at KTH, Sweden, and NTU, Singapore. This is a fully funded, joint doctoral position leading to a joint PhD degree awarded by KTH and NTU. The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Aristides Gionis (KTH), Associate Professor Kelly Ke Yiping (NTU), and Assistant Professor Sebastian Dalleiger (KTH). The doctoral candidate will be recruited and formally registered at KTH and will spend at least 12 months at NTU in Singapore as part of the joint program.

The research project is primarily focused on machine learning. Potential research topics include, but are not limited to, algorithmic knowledge discovery, graph mining and social network analysis, optimization for machine learning, representation learning, as well as fair, responsible, and transparent machine learning.

Applicants must hold a master's degree at the time of registration. Successful candidates should be highly self-motivated and committed to publishing and presenting high-quality research. A solid background in algorithm design, machine learning, and optimization is crucial, along with strong programming and implementation skills.

Supervision: Aristides Gionis (KTH), Sebastian Dalleiger (KTH), and Kelly Ke Yiping (NTU) are proposed to supervise the doctoral candidate. Final decisions are made upon admission.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed a degree at an advanced level, or
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or
• acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English proficiency equivalent to English B/6.

Selection

To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In selecting applicants, the ability to:

• independently drive your work forward,
• collaborate with others,
• have a professional approach, and
• analyze and work with complex issues.
• Applicants must have or be in the process of obtaining a master's degree in computer science, machine learning, AI, data science, or a related field.
• Applicants must have strong academic merits, demonstrated through excellent grades or relevant projects.

After meeting the eligibility requirements, great weight will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral candidates. The total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years. An employed doctoral candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral candidate is valid for a maximum of one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
