Mathematics with a focus on applied mathematics.
Subject Description
Basic research in mathematics motivated by applications within one or more of the areas of stochastic control, optimization under uncertainty, inverse problems, and numerical methods within these areas.
Responsibilities
Research and teaching in the subject area. During the tenure as Assistant Professor, the majority of the time will be devoted to research, with the aim of establishing the Assistant Professor as an independent researcher within the international research community. Teaching may include courses in mathematics from basic to advanced levels, as well as supervision of degree projects and doctoral students. Some administrative duties may also be included. The Assistant Professor is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within four years. If necessary, a language plan will be established as support in connection with the employment.
The Assistant Professor will be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and gain merits that can qualify them for another teaching position with higher requirements for qualifications (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). The Assistant Professor may apply for promotion to Professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Qualifications
Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor is someone who has completed a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, those who have completed a doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence no more than seven years before the time of application for the position as Assistant Professor should be considered. However, those who have completed a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.
Assessment Criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as an Assistant Professor at KTH are those specified in Section 1.3 of KTH's Employment Regulations in relation to the established employment profile.
It is of highest importance that the applicant has
- scientific proficiency in the subject area demonstrated through publications in high-quality international journals, presentations, and participation in conferences, as well as other commitments within the research community such as peer review or expert assignments.
- potential for merit for higher teaching positions. This includes potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher within the current subject area, as well as the ability to establish, renew, and develop the current research area.
It is of next highest importance that the applicant has
- postdoctoral experience in a research environment other than the institution where the applicant defended their thesis. Experience from research and development work within industry or other organizations is assessed as equivalent to a traditional postdoctoral stay at another university.
- interest in and insight into pedagogical development within the current subject area.
- interest in and insight into leadership in academia, collaboration with the surrounding society, and awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with a special focus on gender equality.
It is also of significance that the applicant has
- administrative proficiency.
Special Assessment Criteria for Promotion to Professor
When considering applications for promotion to Professor, provisions according to 1.2.4 in KTH's Employment Regulations will apply. The ability to teach in Swedish is a merit that is given great weight when applying for promotion.

Fixed-term until: The employment is permanent, but for a maximum of six years, and can be renewed if, due to the teacher's sick leave, parental leave, or other special reasons, additional time is required to achieve the purpose of the employment. However, the total employment period may not exceed eight years. The employment is part of the Tenure Track system at KTH, and the Assistant Professor will be assessed for promotion to Professor after application.
