Controller at Lerum Municipality – Develop Financial Management in a Super Municipality
Lerum Municipality is known for its beautiful natural areas with lakes and forests. The municipality has 3,200 employees and 43,000 residents but expects significant growth in the coming years. Lerum is located just a 20-minute drive from Gothenburg and is currently facing a period of intense development with many exciting projects underway, ranging from schools to housing. The municipality works to ensure both good service, high welfare, and a thriving business climate.
Additionally, Dagens Samhälle has recently named Lerum the winner in the category of large municipalities (2025) – an award based on a comprehensive comparison of 290 Swedish municipalities regarding schools, healthcare and social services, economy, culture and leisure, attractiveness, business life, and future factors such as digitalization and civil preparedness. We are now a Super Municipality!
Do you want to help develop financial management in one of the municipality's largest and most important operations?
We are looking for a Controller who not only monitors the development of operations but actively contributes to it. The role involves close collaboration with the sector manager and operational managers, where you provide qualified support in economic and strategic matters.
As a Controller, you will become part of the municipality's finance unit, which belongs to the municipal executive board and provides qualified financial support to all municipal operations. The unit consists of 12 accountants organized in teams for the municipality's different sectors. The unit also includes 6 finance assistants and 2 system administrators. You will play a central role in creating a holistic perspective, quality, and development within the financial management of the education sector.
1 position(s).
Responsibilities
As a Controller, you are responsible for coordinating and developing financial work within the education sector together with a team of 3-4 accountants. You work both operationally and strategically and serve as a qualified support to the sector's leadership.
Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating cross-sector budgeting, forecasting, and closing processes
- Producing analyses, decision support materials, and economic impact assessments for the entire sector
- Supporting the sector manager and operational managers in financial matters
- Contributing to the development of financial management, follow-up, and key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Ensuring the quality of financial documentation and processes
- Participating in municipality-wide development and investigation work
- Collaborating closely with other accountants within the finance unit, primarily the team focused on the sector
- Serving as a presenter in the executive group and committees
You will act as a crucial link between operations and the finance unit, contributing to integrating financial perspectives into operational development and decision-making.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has:
- An academic degree in economics or other education deemed equivalent by the employer
- Several years of experience in qualified financial work such as budgeting, forecasting, follow-up, and closing
- Very good ability to communicate in Swedish, both orally and in writing
It is meritorious if you have:
- Experience in financial work within municipal operations or other politically governed organizations
- Experience with the financial system Unit4/Agresso and/or analysis and follow-up tools such as Power BI, Hypergene, or similar
- Experience working with qualified financial tasks within educational activities such as preschool, primary school, upper secondary school, or adult education
- Experience leading or driving development work
Who are you?
We are looking for someone who wants to be more than just a support in financial matters. You are driven by understanding operations, contributing new perspectives, and turning analyses into improvements that make a difference.
You take initiative, identify areas that need development, and have the ability to drive issues from idea to implementation. When you see a need for change, you dare to raise the issue, argue for your conclusions, and stand by them when necessary.
To succeed in this role, you need to be confident in your competence and able to present your conclusions clearly and respectfully. You collaborate easily, build good relationships, and can explain financial connections in a way that is understandable and relevant to operations. You thrive in a role where you are expected to influence, coordinate, and create results without being a manager.
We place great emphasis on personal suitability.
