The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is advertising 5–6 positions as doctoral students.
The doctoral positions are available within one or more of the following subjects:
- archaeology,
- library and information science,
- English,
- film studies,
- history,
- art and visual studies,
- literary studies,
- musicology,
- religious studies,
- Swedish.
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, one of Linnaeus University's five faculties, is a dynamic, flexible, and international knowledge environment with both scientific and artistic activities in a large number of subjects. The faculty has seven departments and one institute. Doctoral education is conducted at five of the departments. Subject area for the position: archaeology, library and information science, English, history, film studies, art and visual studies, literary studies, musicology, religious studies, or Swedish.
- The subjects English, history, literary studies, and Swedish can be studied with a didactic orientation.
- The subjects English and Swedish can be studied with an orientation in multilingualism.
- The subject English can be studied with a literary studies or linguistics orientation.
Place of employment (permanent): Kalmar or Växjö. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between locations occurs.
Duration and period of employment: The employment is fixed-term according to the Higher Education Ordinance (HF) Chapter 5, Section 7, corresponding to a maximum of four years of full-time studies. The extent is full-time.
Start date: February 1, 2027.
Job Description
As a doctoral student, you will undergo doctoral education leading to a doctoral degree, corresponding to a maximum of four years of full-time studies. You will follow the general study plan for your subject and hold your employment at the department where your subject is located. See the subject websites. Depending on your research focus, you also have the opportunity to participate in one of the faculty's interdisciplinary research environments.
The Higher Education Ordinance states that those employed as doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education. An employee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, and administration. Such work, before the doctoral degree has been awarded, may not exceed 20% of full working hours.
The person employed is expected to spend the majority of their working time at Linnaeus University's campuses in Växjö or Kalmar, except for periods when the research task requires absence (e.g., archive visits/fieldwork/conferences).
Qualification Requirements
Basic eligibility is held according to Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance (https://www.riksdagen.se/sv/dokument-lagar/dokument/svensk-forfattningssamling/hogskoleforordning-1993100_sfs-1993-100#K7) by those who have:
- completed an advanced level degree,
- completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
- in another way, in Sweden or abroad, acquired equivalent knowledge.
The university may grant an exception from the requirement of basic eligibility for an individual applicant if there are special reasons.
Special eligibility is held by those who have:
- 120 higher education credits in the current subject, or a related subject, or equivalent knowledge
- of which 30 higher education credits at an advanced level, of which at least 15 higher education credits are an independent project
- good knowledge of Swedish and/or English.
Evaluation Criteria
The assessment of applicants' ability to complete the education at the doctoral level is done through a weighing that takes into account the following:
- The relevance, originality, and feasibility of the dissertation plan during four years of full-time education.
- Scientific skill documented in scientific works, especially regarding the quality of the advanced level degree project, and other scientific works.
- The breadth and composition of the basic degree and the impression the selection committee gets of the applicant's prerequisites for benefiting from the doctoral education.
- Personal suitability will be given weight.
Application
The application is written in Swedish or English. It begins with a clear indication of which subject you are applying for doctoral education in, and must consist of the following documents:
- A cover letter where you justify why you are applying for the doctoral education.
- Your CV (max two pages).
- Notarized copies of merit documents showing that you meet the qualification requirements for the doctoral position.
- A research plan (max 12,000 characters excluding references). The plan must contain the following parts: a) an introductory popular science summary/abstract of max 2,000 characters b) purpose and goals, c) research questions, d) theoretical framework, e) method and timeline.
- A copy of your advanced level degree project or equivalent.
- Name and contact details for up to two persons who have agreed to serve as your references.
