Your Responsibilities

As a PhD student, you will work within a research project on disability and society. The project is linked to a longitudinal study where we examine how hearing impairment and the use of hearing aids relate to cognitive changes, brain organization in adulthood, and aging. You will be admitted to the doctoral education in the interdisciplinary subject of Disability and Society.

The work involves developing and conducting studies, analyzing longitudinal behavioral and brain imaging data (e.g., fMRI), using longitudinal analysis methods to study changes over time, and writing scientific articles for international journals. The research is conducted interdisciplinarily in close collaboration with researchers from various disciplines.

As a PhD student, you will focus on your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20 percent of full-time equivalent.

Your Qualifications

You have completed an advanced degree in a subject relevant to disability and society, such as psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, or gerontology, or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at an advanced level in a corresponding area, or have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.

You must have:

  • Good ability to communicate in Swedish, both orally and in writing
  • Documented experience in quantitative research methods and statistical analysis

The following are particularly meritorious:

  • Documented experience in cognitive testing or brain imaging
  • Documented knowledge in disability and society, cognitive aging, cognitive psychology, or cognitive neuroscience
  • Documented ability to independently develop scientific questions and relate them to relevant methodological and analytical approaches
  • Documented ability to communicate scientifically in English, both orally and in writing

Meritorious qualifications include:

  • Documented experience in advanced statistical methods or statistical modeling of longitudinal data
  • Documented experience in brain imaging methods within cognitive neuroscience, such as fMRI
  • Documented experience in programming, e.g., in R, Python, or Matlab
  • Documented experience in the design, implementation, or analysis of experimental studies
  • Documented experience in applying practices within open science

The project is carried out in an interdisciplinary research context and in close collaboration with several researchers. Therefore, a good ability to work independently is required, as well as the ability to collaborate constructively in research groups. Furthermore, analytical skills, attention to detail, and a structured work approach are required.

The application must include a short project plan (max 2 pages) describing your research interest, examples of possible research questions related to the project's focus, and how these can be studied methodologically. The project plan will be used as part of the assessment of your motivation for doctoral education, your ability to independently formulate and discuss scientific questions, and to relate them to relevant methodological and analytical approaches.
