We also provide support to preschools and schools nationwide to jointly create learning environments that are developmental and accessible. About Åsbackaskolan

All students have the right to a school that gives them the opportunity to develop based on their own prerequisites. SPSM runs schools on behalf of the state. We offer students a learning environment that provides them with the opportunity for participation, learning, and development. We offer meaningful, stimulating, and important pedagogical work at our schools.

Åsbackaskolan is located in Örebro and offers education from preschool class through grade 10 for students with congenital deafblindness and students who are deaf or have hearing loss in combination with intellectual disability. Our staff is fluent in sign language and possesses high specialized competence regarding the needs of our target group. We offer housing for students who cannot commute to school every day.

Åsbackaskolan receives students from all over Sweden who are deaf or have a hearing loss in combination with an intellectual disability, or are congenitally deafblind, and who follow adapted curriculum plans for the compulsory school focusing on subject areas.

We offer our students an environment that provides opportunities for participation and development. Everyone can participate in social interaction, feel a sense of belonging, and develop as individuals in a bilingual education in a sign language environment.

At Åsbackaskolan, we believe that development and learning occur in all environments and during all hours of the day from a lifelong perspective. Our overall goal is to provide all our students with the prerequisites to learn and to live as independent a life as possible. We place great emphasis on developing students' desire and wish for social interaction, engagement, and communication in a sign language environment. The teaching is adapted based on each student's prerequisites and needs. We work with experiential learning as a pedagogical method.

At Åsbackaskolan, we have excellent access to various professions in our student health team and to digital learning tools in a well-equipped IT environment.

We are approximately 16 employees who work at the school or in our student residences.

Job Responsibilities

At Åsbackaskolan, we are now looking for a special education teacher who wants to contribute to creating the very best conditions for our students in the adapted compulsory school.

As a special education teacher with us, you will have a central role in the students' development, both academically and personally.

You will:

  • teach both subjects and subject areas within the adapted compulsory school
  • be a mentor for a group of students and work closely with students, guardians, and colleagues
  • plan, adapt, and develop teaching based on each student's needs and strengths
  • contribute to a safe, structured, and inspiring learning environment

Here you will have the opportunity to be creative, solution-focused, and work long-term with the students' independence and learning.

We are looking for you who

  • are a conscious, curious, and courageous teacher
  • see opportunities where others see obstacles
  • believe in all students' ability to develop
  • use digital tools in a natural and professional manner

Qualifications

  • have a teaching license that qualifies you to teach as a special education teacher for students with intellectual disabilities at the special school.
  • have education and/or experience working with students with intellectual disabilities and neuropsychiatric disabilities, and with students who are deafblind.
  • fluent in Swedish Sign Language.
  • are proficient in the computer programs commonly used in the school.

Work experience is required.

It is meritorious if you:

  • have experience leading a work group
  • have a solution-focused approach that is also engaging, guiding, and motivating.
  • have experience working with the method "Low-Affective Handling" (Lågaffektivt bemötande).
  • have experience working with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

The school also has student housing for some students, and therefore, there is a requirement for collaboration skills with both the staff at the student housing and with other professions related to the student's school day.

We have access to interactive whiteboards in all classrooms, so experience and knowledge in handling such aids is meritorious.

Duration: Permanent.
A probationary period of 6 months applies.
