Who are we?

Archaeologists (Arkeologerna) is part of the National Historical Museums and is a major consultancy within archaeology and cultural heritage. We have just over 100 employees at our five regional offices in different parts of the country. We work across office boundaries both in networks and in projects. At the offices in Stockholm and Uppsala, we operate in an area covering the Mälaren Valley and Norrland. We are in an expansion phase with several ongoing and upcoming major investigations, including for the railway Ostlänken.

We want to strengthen our competence to carry out high-quality archaeological assignments and deliver solid foundations to the County Administrative Boards in the region. Therefore, we need to expand our workforce.

Who are we looking for?

We are currently looking for several archaeologists in a project leadership position. We will recruit continuously during the summer/autumn of 2026.

We are looking for you who have education and experience within one or more of the periods: Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, as well as the Middle Ages/historical time, and who have the ability to apply this within the framework of contract archaeology and Archaeologists' areas of operation.

Your assignment will be to lead and participate in projects where you collaborate with your colleagues and take responsibility for goal achievement and other operations, as well as to participate in other projects as a project employee. This presupposes that you are a team player with a high degree of professionalism, developed cooperation skills, that you are communicative and contribute to a good working environment.

An important part of the assignments is to maintain and develop good relationships with both internal and external partners and to be a curious scanner of the external environment.

You will work with assignments throughout the region, starting from our office in Stockholm (Hägersten) or the one in Uppsala. Work in projects driven by our other offices in the country may also occur.

To succeed in the role, you should have:

• An academic degree in archaeology or equivalent.
• Documented experience of project management within contract archaeology.
• Good knowledge of archaeological methods and theory.
• Documented experience of archaeological field and reporting work.
• Good experience with digital documentation technology.
• Driver's license for passenger car.
• You must master Swedish in speech and writing.

It is meritorious if you have:

• A higher academic degree and/or a specialization within the subject area.
• Experience in writing tenders.
• Written scientific articles published in peer-reviewed publications.
• A network within the respective subject area.
• Experience in mediation work.

The position is a permanent employment starting upon agreement. We apply a probationary period of six months. Your place of work will be at Archaeologists' office in Stockholm (Hägersten) or Uppsala.

The museums are the Economic Museum with Tumba Bruksmuseum, Hallwylska Museet, the Historical Museum, the Royal Armoury, Skokloster Castle, and the Swedish Museum of the Holocaust. The contract operations Archaeologists have offices in five regions. Our task is to promote knowledge and interest in Sweden's history and to preserve and develop the cultural heritage managed by the agency. The agency has approximately 400 employees.
