Teacher of Swedish as a Second Language

About International English School Växjö
International English School (IES) Växjö is part of Sweden’s largest and most successful network of bilingual schools, serving students in grades F–9. IES Växjö has approximately 300 students and 35 staff members. We follow the Swedish national curriculum, Lgr22, with up to 50 percent of instruction delivered in English.
At IES Växjö, we believe in high academic expectations, a bilingual education in English and Swedish, and mutual respect between students and staff. We strive to equip every student with knowledge, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility to prepare them for future success.
As a Teacher of Swedish as a Second Language (SVA), you will play a central role in providing SVA students with a secure and structured pathway to their Swedish language education.
Your Responsibilities
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate instruction in Swedish as a Second Language (SVA)
- Assess and monitor students’ linguistic and academic development
- Create individually tailored lesson plans based on student needs
- Teach individually, in small groups, and, when necessary, through co-teaching in mainstream classes
- Identify the need for additional accommodations and special support
- Collaborate closely with subject teachers, mentors, special educators, the student welfare team, and school leadership
- Support colleagues in implementing language-developing teaching methods and differentiated instruction
- Maintain close and clear communication with parents and guardians regarding students’ language development and academic progress
- Document, monitor, and evaluate student progress
- Work in alignment with IES’s three core values: Mastery of the English language, A secure and orderly environment, and High academic expectations.
About You
You have the ability to build strong and trusting relationships with students of various ages. You see opportunities and strengths in a multicultural school environment and hold high expectations for every student’s potential to develop.
You are organized, flexible, and analytical. You work well independently but also thrive when collaborating with colleagues on student development and needs.
We are looking for someone with
- A teaching degree and valid teacher certification, preferably with authorization to teach Swedish as a Second Language
- Knowledge of newly arrived students’ learning and language development
- Strong understanding of relevant guidelines and assessment materials
- Excellent communication skills in English, as English is a common working language at the school
- Strong digital skills and experience with pedagogical documentation
- Experience teaching students across different age groups
- Experience working with students with special needs, additional accommodations, and targeted support
- Experience working in an international or bilingual school environment
We preferably seek candidates with formal SVA competence and substantial experience teaching Swedish as a Second Language.
