About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation, remand prisons, and client transport.

The Norrköping operational area includes Skenäs Prison and the Norrköping Remand Prison. We are expanding and currently planning for the future of the Prison and Probation Service – now we are looking for you who want to grow with us!

Skenäs Prison will be upgraded from security class 3 to security class 2 during 2026, which means a major focus on our general security work. We also have a care department with both security, health, and medical care work. The prison is located on the island of Vikbolandet, about 30 km outside Norrköping, with no connection to public transport. The remand prison is located in central Norrköping.

Do you want a job where you truly make a difference for people and society? We warmly welcome your application!

Job Description

As a prison officer, you are part of a team where you have daily contact with the client. The tasks at the prison/remand prison are varied: care, supervision, search, and security work are mixed with release planning and conversation/motivation work. Work at the remand prison is often routine-based and focused on care and security tasks. Clients can be held in remand for long periods without seeing anyone other than their lawyer and the staff at the remand prison, which places special demands on you as a prison officer.

Working as a prison officer means you can make a difference for other people and contribute to a better society. To thrive and succeed in your assignment, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic values regarding a human view of people, respect for the individual, and the belief that humans are capable of development.

You start your employment at the workplace where you receive an introduction for three weeks. After a period of service, you are offered a place at the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic training, which is mandatory and lasts for 8 weeks. You receive salary during the entire training period. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments are conducted regarding your possibility of permanent employment.

It is the operational needs that determine whether you are placed at the prison or the remand prison.

Qualifications

Your personal qualities are important. As a prison officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, good judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need to have good cooperation skills and be clear in your communication. You should be able to act physically when required.

For us, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic values regarding a human view of people, respect for the individual, and the belief in human will and ability to develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute with your attitude to ensure that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

We are looking for you who have:

  • Completed upper secondary education or alternatively other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
  • Work experience, also in the form of seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not to be equated with employment
  • Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
  • Good computer skills
  • Category B driver's license

The following is also meritorious:

  • Work experience from the prison and probation service, pedagogical work, security work, social care, psychiatry, or care and nursing work
  • Multi-year work experience from another profession that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
  • Knowledge in relevant areas, for example pedagogy, behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management

Other

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service has chosen to remove the personal cover letter and replaced it with selection questions that are relevant to the position. The answers to the selection questions and the CV form the basis for whether you are qualified to move forward in the process.
