Lund University conducts animal-based research at the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Science, LTH (Faculty of Engineering), and the Faculty of Humanities and Theology. Individuals working with laboratory animals must possess both theoretical and practical competence in the areas and animal species they work with. The Faculty of Medicine is responsible for coordinating education in Laboratory Animal Science (LAS). The courses aim to provide fundamental theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills within laboratory animal science. The theoretical education is web-based, while the practical education and examinations take place at the local animal facilities.

The work is carried out in a complex research environment where working with laboratory animals places high demands on practical skill, ethical awareness, and scientific quality. To ensure that animal experiments are conducted in accordance with current legislation and established guidelines, systematic and continuous development and follow-up of staff competence are required.

We are now looking for a project manager who will be responsible for establishing and managing the work with education and examination of personnel involved in laboratory animal activities at Lund University.

Responsibilities

The Project Manager for Education and Examination is responsible for ensuring that individuals working with laboratory animals hold and maintain the theoretical and practical competence required by Swedish legislation and European guidelines.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Competency mapping
  • Planning and conducting education
  • Examination and competency assessment
  • Continuous follow-up
  • Quality and reproducibility
  • Animal welfare and ethics
  • Documentation and traceability
  • Collaboration

The role also involves:

  • Objectively assessing practical competence with integrity
  • Developing structured educational programs
  • Identifying limitations in an individual's competence
  • Promoting learning and security in practical exercises.

A significant part of the work is based on established regulations and guidelines found in Swedish legislation, EU frameworks, and international guidelines such as ETPLAS and FELASA.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a university/higher education with a focus on; licensed veterinarian, licensed veterinary nurse, biomedicine, or other education deemed suitable by the employer for the current tasks.

The applicant must have documented education in laboratory animal science and a good understanding of the relationship between technique, animal welfare, and research quality (e.g., trained in GLP - Good Laboratory Practice).

The applicant must have good knowledge of:

  • Swedish and EU legislation
  • The EU's Education and Training Framework for animal experiments
  • Research and animal welfare (validity and reproducibility)

The applicant must be proficient in both Swedish and English, both verbally and in writing. It is an advantage if the applicant holds a Category B driver's license.

The applicant must have personal qualities such as being self-initiating, proactive, easy to work with, thorough, detailed, flexible, communicative, and courageous.

In addition to the above, the applicant must also have:

  • Very good practical experience working with different species of laboratory animals, experimental procedures, and sampling methods,
  • Documented experience in educating and mentoring staff,
  • Previous experience in similar tasks.

Other Information

  • The position is fixed-term for 1 year with a workload of 60%.
  • Start date is September 1, 2026, or by agreement.
  • The position will be located at BMC in Lund.
