Responsibilities

The AICell lab (https://aicell.io) at the Department of Applied Physics at KTH and Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) is a research group funded by the Data-driven Life Science Fellows (DDLS) program. Led by Wei Ouyang, the group is building the next generation of AI systems for cell and molecular biology.

AlphaCell is a new SciLifeLab initiative aimed at developing the first molecular-level computational model of the human cell. The program is led by Jan Ellenberg (Director of SciLifeLab) and Mathias Uhlén (Director of the Human Protein Atlas), together with a collaborative, multi-dimensional constellation of SciLifeLab researchers and infrastructure units.

The AlphaCell program is now recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in AI modeling. The position is located at the AICell lab at KTH and SciLifeLab. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with Avlant Nilsson's group for cancer cell modeling at Karolinska Institutet and SciLifeLab, as well as with the data team at the Human Protein Atlas.

The role is computational but grounded in biological questions. You will develop and train large-scale AI models that learn to represent, predict, and simulate cell behavior from heterogeneous biological datasets — including live-cell fluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy, and molecular measurements. A strong ability to understand biological systems, interpret complex datasets, and link modeling choices to biological questions is central.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A completed PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Proficiency in English, as we work in an international environment.

Merits

  • At the application deadline, no more than three years have passed since the PhD degree or an equivalent foreign degree was awarded.
  • Strong grounding in biological systems and documented interest in cell biology and biological modeling.
  • Experience in interpreting biological data, preferably microscopy and multimodal datasets combining imaging and molecular measurements.
  • Background in computational biology, bioinformatics, or machine learning for biological problems.
  • Experience with modern deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, JAX, or equivalent).
  • Good software engineering practices, including modular, well-documented, and reproducible code.
  • Thrives in interdisciplinary teams and has good communication skills between computational and experimental environments.
  • Scientifically curious, self-motivated, and driven by biologically meaningful modeling problems.
  • Strong pedagogical skills.
  • Aware of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with a particular focus on gender equality.

We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.

The application should include:

  • CV including relevant professional experience and knowledge.
  • Copies of degree certificates and transcripts from your previous university studies. Translations into English or Swedish if the original documents are not issued in either of these languages.
  • A brief statement on why you want to conduct research, your academic interests, and how they relate to your previous studies and future goals. Max 2 pages long.

The application must be received by KTH no later than the last day of application at midnight, CET/CEST (Central European Time/Central European Summer Time).

About the Position

The employment is permanent, but for a maximum of two years.

A postdoctoral position is a time-limited merit-based appointment with a primary focus on research, intended as a first career step after doctoral defense.
