We are looking for a PhD student in Computer Science placed at the Department of Computer Science (IDA).

Your responsibilities

As a PhD student, you will focus on your doctoral studies and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20% of full-time employment.

You will conduct research under the supervision of Jendrik Seipp, Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence at LiU.

The research projects for this advertised position fall within the areas of automated planning and machine learning. The focus will be on developing and automatically learning new methods to efficiently solve planning problems. The projects will involve both theoretical and experimental work.

Your qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student who wants to make a difference in artificial intelligence. You have completed a master's degree in computer science or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level in computer science, or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

We expect you to have previous experience in areas such as automated planning, machine learning, reinforcement learning, logic, knowledge representation, or combinatorial optimization. Furthermore, you should have excellent academic results, very good programming skills, and good ability to express yourself in spoken and written English.

Your workplace

The Department of Computer Science (IDA) was founded in 1983, but our roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in Northern Europe. Our research covers a broad spectrum of areas, from fundamental computer science to applied fields. The extensive research also influences our undergraduate and doctoral education, leading us to offer courses within several civil engineering and higher education engineering programs, as well as programs in innovative programming, cognitive science, and statistics. You will belong to the Machine Reasoning (MR) unit within the Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems (AIICS) division.

About the employment

The employment is fixed-term for normally four years full-time. Extension of employment up to five years occurs based on the extent of teaching and departmental duties. Under special circumstances, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, after which the employment is renewed for up to two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.

Start date by agreement.
