Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of human life.

Research and education at the Department of Earth Sciences (MGeo) address fundamental and applied questions regarding Earth's past, present, and future climate and environment, including human interaction with nature and its consequences for human well-being. MGeo develops and applies pioneering methods, models, and techniques within environmental science, Quaternary and bedrock geology, paleontology, physical geography, biodiversity and ecosystem science, remote sensing, geographic information science (GIS), and computational science in environmental and health contexts to study processes ranging from the microscopic to the planetary, across all time scales.

Job Description

The researcher will work within the field of astronomy and astrophysics, specifically exploring the Milky Way's disk and halo using massive spectroscopic surveys of Milky Way stars. Particular focus will be placed on utilizing so-called FGK stars, with an emphasis on sub-giants, as probes of the Milky Way's history. Within the context of the Milky Way's history, the group and the researcher are expected to focus on the formation and development of the Milky Way's halo and stellar disk.

The position is located at the Department of Earth Sciences, Division Beta, within the research group led by Professor Sofia Feltzing.

The duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Research on the Milky Way as a galaxy by utilizing data from massive spectroscopic surveys. The research will focus on the formation and development of the Milky Way's disk and halo.
  • The research group is engaged in 4MOST, SDSS-V, and WEAVE, and the researcher is expected to work actively in these projects. This involves participating in various groups that utilize data to learn more about the Milky Way, as well as working groups that enable this work. Examples include participating in quality control and data analysis, taking advantage of opportunities for early use of observational data for studies of the Milky Way as a galaxy, and producing so-called value-added "data products".
  • In the analysis part, the researcher will primarily engage in determining the ages of sub-giants. These data constitute an essential complement to ongoing doctoral projects in the group.
  • Supervision of doctoral students together with the group leader.
  • Responsibility for the group's seminar activities together with the group leader.
  • Work on seeking external research funding for the researcher's own and the group's research.
  • Administration related to the above duties is included.
  • There will be opportunities for university-level pedagogical education.

Requirements for the Position

  • A completed PhD degree; the dissertation topic should cover, wholly or partly, the Milky Way's metal-poor stars and solar twins.
  • Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
  • Completion of a basic course in doctoral student supervision in the capacity of co-supervisor.
  • Experience working in at least one, preferably two, massive spectroscopic surveys of Milky Way stars, e.g., SDSS-V.
  • Documented knowledge, preferably in the form of publications, regarding the age determination of FGK stars.
  • Qualified knowledge of so-called Very Metal-Poor stars, preferably with publications.
  • Experience working in group(s) within large surveys that work with validation and calibration of data products.

Qualifications that are Meritorious

  • It is meritorious to have worked or be working on producing value-added "data products", such as ages.
  • Knowledge of IRAF, specifically within stellar spectroscopy.
  • Experience organizing scientific activities such as, but not limited to, seminars and researcher visits.
  • It is meritorious to have good knowledge of the 4MOST infrastructure.
  • It is meritorious to have participated in various working groups and/or meetings within the SDSS-V collaboration.

Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and contribute to its future development.

Terms and Conditions

Permanent position starting 2027-01-01.

The position is a 100% full-time employment.

Application Instructions

The application must be written in English and include:

  • A curriculum vitae (CV) including a complete list of publications.
  • A general description of previous research work and future research interests (max three pages).
  • A brief description of how the applicant believes they meet the specific requirements of the position and how they believe they can best contribute to developing the group's research (max two pages).
  • Contact details for at least two references.
  • A copy of the PhD diploma and any other certificates/grades you wish to include.

We look forward to receiving your application!

Research and education at the Faculty of Science are conducted within astronomy, biology, physics, earth sciences, chemistry, mathematics, medical radiation physics, environmental science, and physical geography. The activities take place within the northern university area. The faculty has approximately 1,900 students, 330 doctoral students, and 730 employees.

We decline all contact from advertising sales, recruitment, and staffing agencies due to public procurement regulations.
