The Faculty of Economics at Lund University is one of the university's eight faculties. The Department of Economic History is a research-intensive department with approximately 70 employees: researchers, teachers, technical/administrative staff, and doctoral students. The department has a large doctoral education program and coordinates three international master's programs. The department has a well-established reputation for its broad research focusing on long-term processes, where economic theory and quantitative methods serve as important methodological tools. Strong research areas at the department include economic growth and structural transformation, innovation, energy and sustainability, development economics and economic demography, as well as financial history, education, and the labor market. Subject Area and Responsibilities

The subject area is economic history.

The responsibilities consist primarily of research, but also include teaching and certain administrative tasks. The position is linked to a project investigating female inventors in Sweden and France from the beginning of modern patent systems until 1930. The project builds a database where patent documents are linked to data from civil registers and censuses, analyzing how social background, institutional conditions, and life events such as marriage, childbirth, and widowhood affected women's patenting over their lifetimes.

Requirements

  • Completed PhD degree in economic history, and
  • Documented teaching proficiency.

Qualifications

  • Publications in journals or university presses with international peer review
  • Publications within the project's research area
  • University-level pedagogical education
  • Experience in research on innovation and patent activity from a historical perspective
  • Documented ability to work in Python
  • Experience with machine learning methods for record linkage and text analysis
  • Documented experience with machine learning methods for image-to-text transcription of historical source material
  • Fluent proficiency in Swedish and French

Evaluation Criteria

The Faculty of Economics strives for a balance between research and education in all positions. Therefore, in the assessment of applicants, equal weight will be given to scientific and pedagogical proficiency. Administrative ability is also taken into account in the assessment.

In the overall assessment of scientific proficiency, publication in journals or university presses with an international peer review system is highly meritorious. Publications within the project's research area are meritorious.

The overall assessment of pedagogical qualifications includes university-level pedagogical education, teaching experience, and teaching proficiency. Experience in teaching Swedish and European economic history is a strong merit.

Consideration will be given to how the applicant, through their experience and competence, can complement and strengthen research and education within the department.

In the assessment of scientific proficiency, special weight will be placed on:

  • The quality and volume of scientific production
  • Publications in international peer-reviewed contexts
  • Relevance in relation to the project's research area

In the assessment of teaching proficiency, special weight will be placed on:

  • Documented teaching experience and proficiency
  • Experience in teaching within the relevant subject area
  • Ability to plan, conduct, and develop teaching

Additionally, the following will be considered:

  • Administrative ability
  • Ability to contribute to and collaborate within the department's activities

Conditions

The employment is a fixed-term appointment of approximately 1 year with a workload of 100 percent, starting 2026-09-01.
