At Dalarna University, education, research, and collaboration are conducted within the interdisciplinary field of Work Science. The subject focuses on the interaction between humans and work, with special emphasis on work organization, the labor market, and the work environment. The advertised position is located within Work Science, with a focus on sustainable working life. The position includes participation in the research project FUTOURWORK, which focuses on developing a more inclusive social dialogue that encompasses both traditional and new forms of work within the tourism and visitor industry. The project specifically addresses central issues for a sustainable working life, such as working conditions, work environment, worker representation, well-being, and work-life balance.
Your working day as Assistant Professor
As an Assistant Professor, you will be given the opportunity to develop your independence as a researcher and qualify yourself both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for a permanent position as Associate Professor. The duties will include developing your own research in collaboration with senior colleagues and our doctoral students, applying for external research funding, and participating in teaching.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance, the person eligible for the position of Assistant Professor is one who has completed a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, those who have completed a doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence no more than five years before the time of application for the position of Assistant Professor should be considered. However, those who have completed a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons, such as leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.
Specific requirements for this position include:
- a doctoral degree in Work Science
- research output that is relevant in relation to the field of Work Science, with a specific focus on the tourism and visitor industry, contributing to knowledge development regarding a sustainable and inclusive working life, addressing issues of social dialogue, work environment, worker representation, as well as traditional and new forms of work.
Personal qualities needed to succeed in the role:
- strong analytical skills
- independence
- critical approach
- collaborative skills
- good proficiency in both Swedish and English, both spoken and written.
It is meritorious if you have:
- experience in formulating and developing research within the field of Work Science
- experience in working with pedagogical development within the field of Work Science
As we place great importance on pedagogical skill, applicants who do not already have a university pedagogical qualification will be expected to acquire this competence within two years from the start of employment.
For the role of Assistant Professor, you must have collaborative skills. Other required competencies include administrative ability, initiative-taking, and a high degree of responsibility.
Evaluation Criteria
The University will make a qualitative overall assessment in this recruitment to determine which applicant has the best prerequisites for fulfilling the duties of the position.
In assessing scientific skill, emphasis will be placed on:
- the relevance of research output in relation to the employment profile
In assessing pedagogical skill, emphasis will be placed on:
- Ability to create conditions for student learning and to generate engagement and interest in the subject
- Experience in supervising theses or degree projects
- Demonstrated pedagogical skill through varied contributions to education; such as planning, implementation (teaching and examination), and evaluation that have contributed to the development of pedagogical activities.
It is crucial that applicants, upon employment, who lack a university pedagogical qualification are given the opportunity to acquire this competence as part of their further qualification towards Associate Professor. Application documents will be peer-reviewed.

The Position
The position is fixed-term, 4-6 years, supported by the Higher Education Ordinance. The scope is 100% with immediate availability. Dalarna University is a higher education institution operating in two locations. The location for this position is Borlänge, and some work will also take place in Falun. The position may be renewed, but for a maximum of two years in total, if additional time is required due to sick leave, parental leave, or other special reasons to achieve the purpose of the employment.
