Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 staff members in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's conditions.
Workplace Description
The position is located at the Division of Communication Technology within the Department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University's Faculty of Engineering (LTH). The division comprises 8 senior researchers, approximately 20 PhD students, and maintains a rich collaboration with industry. Within the division, we work with wireless communication in a broad sense, and our activities range from communication theory to the implementation of antenna structures.
Being a PhD Student
As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed by Lund University.
As a doctoral student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently through appropriate method selection, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, as a PhD student, you have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you are guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a thesis and a doctoral degree.
More about being a PhD student at LTH can be found on lth.se.
Subject and Project Description
The subject of the position is the design and analysis of future wireless systems, with a special focus on 6G and distributed MIMO systems (D-MIMO).
The research involves algorithm development for distributed signal processing, synchronization, and resource allocation in distributed MIMO systems, with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind. A world-leading software-defined testbed for D-MIMO, developed at the department, is available for implementations, tests, and measurements.
This PhD position is part of NextG2Com – a Vinnova competence center coordinated by Lund University. NextG2Com is a competence center for future advanced communication systems that integrates wireless communication technology and networks, software, data, and security through relevant application areas (advanced digitalization). In NextG2Com, Lund University collaborates with industry and public actors with support from Vinnova. As a PhD student within NextG2Com, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with industry partners and other PhD students within the center, attend meetings, and participate in various center activities.
More about NextG2Com can be found at nextg2com.lu.se.
Responsibilities
You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects, doctoral education courses, seminars, and conferences.
You will focus on the theory, simulation, and implementation aspects of D-MIMO, in close collaboration with other PhD students and senior researchers, for example, those working with hardware implementation and channel measurements. This makes it possible to make theoretical and simulation studies highly relevant and influence how future wireless systems are designed. Using the testbed, results can also be verified realistically in real-time.
The responsibilities also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (however, max 20% of working time).
There will also be project meetings, joint projects, and close collaboration with partner organizations and other PhD students within NextG2Com.
