Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. There are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.
Responsibilities:
The doctoral studies amount to 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies). Formally, the program concludes with the doctoral candidate publicly defending their printed doctoral thesis. The holder of a doctoral position has the primary obligation to successfully complete the advanced education that culminates in a doctorate. Regulations regarding full-time employment as a doctoral candidate are found in Chapter 5, Sections 1-7 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
The holder of a doctoral position is expected to participate actively in the department's research and teaching environment, particularly within the Division of Human Ecology, and may need to perform departmental duties, primarily teaching, amounting to approximately 20 percent of full-time work.
The doctoral position is linked to the project The Swedish Electricity, which is an interdisciplinary collaboration between Lund University, the University of Gothenburg, and the University of Borås. The project as a whole aims to critically examine and understand how nationalism affects the expansion of energy systems and how nationalist narratives regarding electricity relate to issues of exploitation, justice, and preparedness. (see https://portal.research.lu.se/en/projects/the-swedish-electricity-knowledge-and-communication-between-preparedness-nation/ (https://portal.research.lu.se/en/projects/the-swedish-electricity-knowledge-and-communication-between-preparedness-nation/))
As a doctoral candidate, you will conduct independent research within the framework of the project in an interdisciplinary research team. The doctoral candidate is linked to the part of the project concerning historical events and is expected to contribute research on these issues from a comparative and critical perspective, focusing on the historical expansion and change of the Swedish electricity system. We therefore welcome research ideas that align with the project's objectives. As a doctoral candidate, you are expected to publish your own or co-authored research and work closely with the project group, contributing actively to it. You are expected to present results at national and international conferences. During your education, the doctoral candidate has the opportunity to participate in activities (courses, workshops, etc.) arranged by Lund University Centre for Resilience (LUPREP).
Qualifications/Requirements:
Basic eligibility for admission to doctoral studies is held by those who have
- completed an advanced level degree
- fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or
- acquired in other ways, within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge.
Employment of doctoral candidates is regulated in the Code of Statutes 1998:80. Only those who are or have been admitted to doctoral studies may be employed in doctoral positions. When filling such a position, the student's ability to benefit from the doctoral education should be considered primarily. In addition to studying, the person appointed to a doctoral position may be required to work with educational tasks, research, and administration, according to special regulations in the ordinance.
Assessment Criteria:
The most important assessment criterion is the ability and potential to conduct qualified research in an area relevant to the call. Based on submitted documents, a comprehensive assessment of the applicant's qualifications is made. Merits for the position include 1) experience of environmental and energy history studies, including archive studies, and 2) experience of working with critical interdisciplinary perspectives.
The project is historical and requires the ability to analyze material written in Swedish; therefore, documented good proficiency in Swedish, both spoken and written, is required. For applicants who lack grades from a Swedish upper secondary school, a certificate proving language skills is required.
Application:
The application should contain:
- A cover page of max 300 words containing a short description of you as an applicant and what makes you suitable as a doctoral candidate in the described project. Upload as a PDF file.
- A document that briefly presents a research idea related to the project. This is uploaded as a PDF file. The idea sketch is seen as a work sample and an indication of your research interests. It is not a binding document where you need to conduct exactly the research described. The document should contain the following headings (each of these should not exceed 200 words, excluding references):
- a) Social relevance
- b) Academic relevance/research gap (with references to central works)
- c) Theoretical approaches/key concepts (with references to central works)
