Description of the activity
The Department of Medical Radiation Physics conducts both education and research in various areas of medical radiation physics (www.msf.lu.se/). The research group in nuclear medicine physics (www.msf.lu.se/en/research/nuclear-medicine-group) focuses specifically on quantitative imaging and dosimetry for nuclear medicine therapies.
Being a PhD student
As a PhD student, you are admitted to a doctoral education and are expected to complete the educational program described in an individual study plan.
Subject and project description
The research group has extensive experience in developing methods for image-based quantification of activity and dosimetry in radionuclide therapies, with recent work largely focused on 177Lu-labeled radiopharmaceuticals. The long-term goal is to enable dosimetry-guided treatments tailored to the individual patient. As part of this work, we aim to increase the understanding of how movements during image acquisition affect the estimation of absorbed dose and how these effects can be handled. During your doctoral studies, you will follow a general study plan for doctoral education in the subject of medical radiation physics. Current version: General study plan in medical radiation physics (a new general study plan is expected to be established for the autumn term 2026).
Job responsibilities
You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which largely involves participating in courses and completing a doctoral thesis. In consultation with you, an individual study plan for your education will be drawn up. As a PhD student, you will develop and validate methods to extract motion information from SPECT examinations and compensate for these effects during tomographic reconstruction. This involves a deeper understanding of tomographic reconstruction theory, requiring good mathematical understanding and programming skills. Monte Carlo simulations of gamma cameras will be an important tool. Experiments and work with patient data may also be included. The work on the research projects should be reported in the form of articles for publication in scientific journals, and these will form part of the doctoral thesis.
In addition to studies, a maximum of 20% of working time may be devoted to teaching and other departmental work. As part of this, you will participate in the teaching conducted at the department, normally by leading exercises or laboratory sessions.
Qualifications
To be admitted to doctoral education and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below.
Admission requirements
You meet the basic admission requirements for doctoral education if you have:
- completed an advanced level degree or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level or
- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
You meet the special admission requirements for doctoral education in medical radiation physics if you have:
- completed a hospital physicist degree, or equivalent foreign degree or
- completed another higher education education for basic admission (240 higher education credits) and within this education have taken courses that are directly relevant to the PhD student's doctoral education to at least 60 higher education credits and completed a thesis of at least 30 higher education credits.
Selection criteria
The selection among qualified applicants will be made with regard to the ability to benefit from the education based on the following criteria:
- achieved study results in courses at basic and advanced level
- breadth, depth and relevance from courses at basic and advanced level, including documented knowledge in nuclear medicine physics
- quality of the thesis and other independent work
- good knowledge of spoken and written English
- knowledge of tomographic reconstruction and quantitative SPECT
- proven good skills in data processing with at least one programming language
- knowledge of methods based on artificial intelligence
- experience working with open radiation sources
- personal qualities assessed to facilitate the ability to perform the educational moments and job tasks included in the doctoral education, such as independence, analytical ability, creativity and teamwork.
About the employment
The employment is a fixed-term full-time position, starting 2026-11-01 or by agreement. The doctoral education is four years for full-time studies. In case of teaching and other departmental work, the employment is extended accordingly. Regulations concerning employment as a PhD student are found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

How to apply
The application should be written in Swedish or English and you should attach to your application:
- CV and cover letter explaining why you are interested in the educational place/employment and how the research project matches your interests and educational background.
- Copies of issued study certificates and/or degree certificates. These should prove your basic and special admission to the doctoral education subject and show that you have the subject knowledge required for the current doctoral education project.
- Copy of advanced level thesis
- Other documents you wish to include (copies of grades, contact details for references, recommendation letters, etc.).
