Description of the activity

MAX IV is a Swedish national research laboratory operated by Lund University. It offers researchers from Sweden and internationally access to state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology. With 16 beamlines in operation, the facility hosts more than 1,700 users annually who conduct groundbreaking experiments in materials and life sciences using high-intensity X-ray light.

MAX IV operates two storage rings and a linear accelerator to produce synchrotron light. Its largest accelerator, the 3 GeV electron storage ring, was the first in the world to use a multi-bend-achromat lattice, enabling light with ultra-high brightness and extremely low emittance. Only a few such next-generation storage rings exist today, although many facilities worldwide are now upgrading in this direction.

To stay at the forefront, MAX IV is designing a comprehensive upgrade of the 3 GeV ring, called MAX 4U, with the goal of achieving significant improvements in the light source's performance.

You will work in the Accelerator Development group at MAX IV as well as in the Accelerator Physics group within the Department of Synchrotron Radiation Physics. The Accelerator Development group consists of several experts in the accelerator field, such as accelerator physicists and experts in magnets, RF, and lasers, and is part of MAX IV's accelerator division, which is responsible for developing and operating all accelerator-based light sources at MAX IV. This division is also responsible for implementing the major accelerator upgrade within the MAX 4U project. The Accelerator Research Group at the Department of Synchrotron Radiation Physics has decades of experience in accelerator physics, from storage rings to linear accelerators, focusing on synchrotron light sources and free-electron lasers.

Being a PhD student

As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed by Lund University.

As a doctoral student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in thinking critically and analytically, solving problems independently using appropriate methods, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, as a PhD student, you are given the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you are guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

Design of storage ring and beam optics control

We offer a PhD position within accelerator physics focusing on the design, optimization, and control of advanced storage ring lattices for MAX IV's upgrade project, MAX4U.

Responsibilities

You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which largely consists of writing a doctoral thesis.

Your PhD project combines simulations, method development, and experimental studies at the MAX IV laboratory and includes the following:

  • Design of storage ring lattice
  • Theoretical studies and development of linear and non-linear optics control
  • Operation and experimental studies on MAX IV's accelerators
  • Contribution to the design and development of the MAX4U project

In addition to studies, a maximum of 20% of working time may be devoted to teaching and other departmental duties.

This will include teaching and supervising laboratory exercises for students, as well as tasks related to the operation of MAX IV's accelerators.

Qualifications

To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below.

Admission requirements

You meet the general admission requirements for doctoral studies if you have:

  • completed an advanced level degree or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level or
  • acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

You meet the specific admission requirements for physics if you have:

  • completed an independent project (e.g., thesis) in a relevant subject comprising at least 30 higher education credits

The specific admission requirement may also have been obtained through other equivalent education, which is assessed on a case-by-case basis. To enable interdisciplinary initiatives and significant deepening in certain areas, qualifications other than the applicant's subject-specific competence in Physics may be taken into account.

Other requirements

  • good ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle scientific problems.
  • good ability in written and oral communication
  • good teamwork skills
  • very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written

Selection criteria

The selection among qualified applicants will be based on the ability to benefit from the education according to the following criteria:

  • experience in accelerator physics
  • knowledge of Python or other programming languages
  • experience with accelerator simulations
  • experience with beam diagnostics
  • other knowledge and skills relevant to the PhD project and the subject area
