Description of the Department

The Department of Built Environment and Civil Engineering comprises several divisions, including the Division of Fire Safety. Within the department, research and teaching are conducted related to society's need for infrastructure and construction. This includes taking safety aspects into account and developing methods to handle the consequences of fires and other similar accidents in society.

Research in fire safety concerns physical and chemical processes related to the origin, growth, spread, and extinguishment of fires, interactions between fire and buildings, facilities, natural resources, etc., systems to prevent or detect fire or limit its consequences, as well as evacuation and human behavior during fires. The aim is to find cost-effective, sustainable, and innovative methods to keep damage to people, the environment, and property at an acceptable level.

The work is usually carried out in smaller research groups linked to a specific subject area. However, the work is also characterized by an interdisciplinary approach with collaboration across subject boundaries and with colleagues in other divisions within the university. The Division of Fire Safety consists of about 20 researchers, doctoral students, and administrative staff. Most have their workplace in Lund, but some also work from other locations, e.g., from Campus Helsingborg.

Being a Doctoral Student

As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.

As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in thinking critically and analytically, solving problems independently using appropriate methods, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, as a doctoral student, you have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you are guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

Subject and Project Description

The doctoral position is focused on the area of evacuation in emergency situations, with a special focus on people with disabilities. This is linked to the English concept of "egressibility," i.e., accessibility to evacuation opportunities for everyone.

The doctoral position is primarily focused on collecting and analyzing data related to the evacuation of vulnerable groups with the aim of facilitating the current group's ability to handle an emergency situation. The project will involve a range of different methodological approaches (e.g., interviews, experiments with hypothetical scenarios, and AI-based modeling) to study human behavior in evacuation situations during emergencies.

The doctoral project is linked to an ongoing grant from the European Research Council on egressibility (ERC Consolidator Grant "Egressibility"). The research is conducted in connection with the Helsingborg Safety Hub, located at Lund University's Campus Helsingborg.

Responsibilities

You will primarily devote yourself to your doctoral education, which includes participating in research projects as well as doctoral education courses, seminars, and conferences. The responsibilities may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (however, max 20% of working time). You are also expected to participate in national and international conferences to present and discuss your research with others in the field.

Qualifications

To be admitted and employed as a doctoral student, you must meet the requirements below.

Admission Requirements

You meet the basic eligibility for higher education at the third cycle level if you have:

• completed an advanced level degree or
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level or
• acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

You meet the special eligibility for Fire Safety if you have:

• a fire engineering education comprising 210 higher education credits, or
• a degree at an advanced level within a relevant subject area.

Other Requirements

To benefit from the current doctoral education, the following are also required:

• good initiative and ability to drive work forward
• good ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle scientific problems.
• good ability in written and oral communication
• good teamwork skills
• very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written
• knowledge related to the area of evacuation

Merits

The following are considered merits for the current doctoral education:

• knowledge and experience related to the collection and analysis of data from the evacuation field
• previous thesis work related to the subject area
