Workplace Description
The Research Group in Epidemiology at the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Lund University, conducts research on how factors in the external environment affect human health. The research combines data from national population registers with data collection via surveys. A particular focus area is the health effects of tattooing, where the research group is internationally leading.
We are now seeking a motivated PhD student with a strong interest in socially relevant health issues for the project Think before you ink? Tattooing as a risk factor for cancer and immune-mediated diseases.
The research group is led by Docent Christel Nielsen and is located at Medicon Village in Lund, together with the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinic at Region Skåne. The group is international and consists of staff with various subject competencies and experience levels.

Tasks and Responsibilities
In addition to following the study plan for graduate education and participating in relevant doctoral courses, you will:
- Plan and conduct epidemiological studies based on national register data and survey data
- Work with processing and statistical analysis of large datasets
- Participate in data collection within the project's sub-studies, which may also include participation in applications to the Swedish Ethical Review Authority and contacts with register holders
- Contribute to scientific reporting by writing and publishing scientific articles
- Actively participate in seminars and research group meetings, as well as present results in various national and international contexts
You are expected to take significant responsibility for your work by:
- Actively contributing to discussions about the project's scientific results
- Developing and maintaining close collaboration with supervisors and colleagues
- Planning, structuring, and driving your work forward in accordance with your individual study plan
The work is carried out in close collaboration with clinical specialists. The employment does not involve work with experimental animals.
Requirements for the position are:
- You have an advanced degree in public health, epidemiology, medicine, biomedicine, or equivalent
- You have basic knowledge of epidemiology and/or statistics
- You have very good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English
- You have good ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others
- You are meticulous, structured, and have good ability to plan and prioritize your work
Great importance will be attached to personal qualities.
It is meritorious if you have:
- experience of statistical analysis in software such as SAS, R, or Stata
- experience of register-based research
- experience of working with large datasets
- experience of scientific writing
- good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in Swedish, especially in relation to work with register data and authority contacts.
Other Information
The employment is fixed-term for four years on a full-time basis according to HF Chapter 5 Section 7, with the desired start date of October 1, 2026, or as agreed.
Eligibility
Basic eligibility for graduate education is held by those who have: completed an advanced degree, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.
Evaluation Basis
Regulations for employment as a PhD student are found in the Ordinance SFS 1998:80. Only those admitted to graduate education may be appointed as holders. In the appointment, attention shall primarily be paid to the degree of ability to benefit from the doctoral education. In addition to the obligation to devote oneself to one's own doctoral education, the holder may be required to perform duties concerning education, research, and administrative work according to special provisions in the ordinance.
