Join our team at the Division of Materials and Manufacturing, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and contribute to impactful research in the field of sustainable battery manufacturing.

About us

At the Department of Mechanical Engineering, we unite the power of technology, people, and society to drive the transition toward a sustainable future. Through research, education, and collaboration, we create solutions that connect materials to mobility, and ideas to impact – shaping a resilient and sustainable world.

In the Division of Materials and Manufacturing, you will join a friendly, international team passionate about shaping the future of materials and production. Our research spans innovative materials, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable solutions – always with real-world impact in mind, and with strong ties to industry. If you are interested in working experimentally and making a difference in the areas of materials and manufacturing, we look forward to receiving your application.

About the research project

Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies related to the project. The main goal of the project is to synthesize new battery materials and develop sustainable electrode manufacturing processes. You will be involved in collaborative projects with academic and industrial partners. To achieve the goal, you need to design and perform experiments in different labs. You also need to develop hands-on skills to fabricate high-performance batteries. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a Master's degree (120 credits) or a Master’s degree (60 credits)* in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Experience in material synthesis and characterization.
  • Personal competences in accordance with the requirements profile, including specifications (e.g., social skills, meaning that you enjoy collaborating with others).

*For students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Experience in the fabrication of lithium-ion batteries.

What you will do

  • Take advanced-level courses within the Graduate School of Materials Science (https://www.chalmers.se/en/research/we-train-new-researchers/graduate-schools/materials-science/).
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
  • The position generally also includes teaching at Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours.
  • Synthesis of energy storage materials.
  • Assemble batteries and evaluate performance.

Contract terms

  • The PhD positions are fully funded from the start.
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility of teaching up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
  • A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 2026).
  • PhD studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise, the admission may be withdrawn.
