to apply for the job
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. There are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's conditions.
Description of the activity
The doctoral student will be employed at the Department of Synchrotron Radiation Physics (https://www.sljus.lu.se (https://www.sljus.lu.se)), which offers a strongly interdisciplinary research environment. The department's activities range from the development of advanced tools and methods using synchrotron light, imaging methods, and electron spectroscopy, to applications within materials science, including research on catalysis, magnetism, and semiconductors. The department has approximately 60 employees, of whom about half are doctoral students. Of particular relevance to this position is the department's research on light-induced ultrafast dynamic processes in small quantum systems on the attosecond time scale, conducted in close collaboration with the Lund Attosecond Science Center (LASC).
LASC is an internationally leading research center in attosecond science and brings together over 20 researchers from various disciplines working with ultrafast science and attosecond technology. LASC is today Sweden's largest research environment for the study of matter's ultrafast dynamics and is part of the Lund Laser Centre (LLC), which is connected to Laserlab Sweden and Laserlab‑Europe. At LASC, there are state-of-the-art attosecond light sources, including intense extreme‑ultraviolet (XUV) pulses (~μJ pulse energy at 100 Hz), tunable XUV‑pulses (at 3 kHz), or ultrashort pulses with high repetition rate (200 kHz), enabling the study of electron motion in atoms, molecules, and solids.
Being a doctoral student
As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in thinking critically and analytically, solving problems independently using appropriate methods, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, doctoral students are given the opportunity to work on projects, develop leadership skills, and enhance pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you are guided by supervisors. The doctoral studies conclude with a thesis and a doctoral degree.
- General syllabus for doctoral education
More about being a doctoral student at the Faculty of Science can be found at naturvetenskap.se (https://naturvetenskap.se).
Subject and project description
The project is part of the Marie Skłodowska‑Curie doctoral network Trilogy: Ultrafast Chirality for Life and Technology and will include a secondment at another university or within industry for a few months.
Responsibilities
You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which largely consists of writing a doctoral thesis.
The position aims to generate structured light carrying spin and orbital angular momentum to induce chirality in matter. Characterization will be based on laser-assisted photoionization and three-dimensional electron detection. Basic work will be carried out in collaboration with the Lund Attosecond Science Center (LASC).
The main task for a doctoral student is to engage in their doctoral education, which includes participating in research projects and doctoral education courses. The responsibilities may also include involvement in teaching and other departmental activities, however, this will not exceed 20% of working time.
