Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading universities. Here, around 46,000 students and 8,500 employees are based in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.
Lund University, the Faculty of Science, and Lund University School of Engineering (LTH), are seeking a promising researcher to conduct groundbreaking research for a position as Associate Professor in Quantum Technology.
What we offer you if you join us
Do you want to become a future research leader through groundbreaking projects and research ideas? If so, you have the chance to start as an Associate Professor within the framework of the Lund University Programme for Global Excellence. We are now looking for a promising, academically young researcher who can build and lead research in quantum technology. Quantum technology is a rapidly growing research field where controlled quantum states of microscopic systems—for example, electrons, atoms, ions, or photons—are utilized to achieve radical improvements in terms of capacity, sensitivity, and speed in various technical applications such as information processing, communication systems, or medical imaging. Internationally, quantum technology is divided into three pillars: quantum computing and simulation, quantum communication and networks, and quantum sensors and metrology.
At Lund University, quantum technology research is conducted within all three pillars, but the majority of the research focuses on quantum sensors and metrology. The activities include ultrafast quantum physics, quantum technology with alkali atoms, quantum states in nanosystems, quantum information theory, quantum spectroscopy, quantum algorithms for optimization, ultracold atomic gases, quantum materials for quantum technology, cryoelectronics for quantum computers, and time-dependent quantum processes. The research is conducted at both the Faculty of Science and LTH, primarily at the Department of Physics but also at the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Geology, and the Department of Electrical and Information Technology. Lund NanoLab and the Lund Laser Centre are central infrastructures for quantum technology research. Further information can be found via the Quantum in Lund website.
Lund University is actively and strategically working to strengthen its research profile in quantum technology, including participation in several major national initiatives and calls. This is expected to bring significant resources to quantum technology research at Lund University in the coming years.
As an Associate Professor, you will build your credentials over 6 years and can then be promoted to a permanent position as a Professor with the possibility of continued career development. You will also receive five weeks of higher education pedagogical training and the opportunity to learn Swedish if needed through the university's Swedish language courses for new international employees. In preparation for your move to Sweden, we offer you support via the university's relocation service, and if you bring your family, they will receive support and new contacts through the Lund International Citizen Hub.
At the turn of the year 2026/2027, the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet), Sweden's largest scientific funder, will announce attractive funding for Associate Professors with an international background. Our ambition is that positions within the framework of the Lund University Programme for Global Excellence will be nominated for this funding. Responsibilities
We want you to develop and make the most of your time at Lund University. As an Associate Professor, you will therefore have the opportunity to focus long-term on the research you are passionate about. The holder of this position will be able to devote the majority of their time to their own research in collaboration with strong research environments, research infrastructures, and international platforms.
In addition to conducting research, you will also develop your pedagogical skills, your ability to collaborate and communicate externally, and your proficiency in the Swedish language during your time as an Associate Professor. Throughout your employment, you will be an active member of your department and participate in its varied activities.
One of your first tasks, we hope, will be to drive an innovative research project funded by the Swedish Research Council.
The responsibilities mainly involve research and, in addition, teaching equivalent to 10-30% of a full-time position, calculated over the entire employment period. The content of the tasks, as well as the distribution between research and teaching, may change over the employment period. Assignments within the department's/faculty's boards and committees may also be included.
At Lund University, you will primarily work with research and lead a research group in quantum technology. You are expected to be able to build active research within the subject area and related fields, which also involves active work to seek external funding for research activities. It includes developing collaboration in quantum technology within the department but also at other faculties or universities. Teaching includes basic and advanced courses.
