We are currently seeking a PhD candidate for the Division of Vehicle Systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY).

Your Responsibilities

The PhD project focuses on the diagnosis of complex multimodal systems and falls within the division's research area of diagnostics and prognostics.

The development of cheaper sensors, increased data storage capacity, improved data transmission, and greater computing power has led to increasingly complex and integrated technical systems. This increased complexity makes the diagnosis problem more challenging, while the richer availability of sensor data and computational resources creates new opportunities to develop powerful diagnostic methods.

The research aims to develop general and computationally efficient methods and algorithms for real-time monitoring and diagnosis of complex multimodal systems. The work will involve theoretical and algorithmic development with the goal of supporting or automating the design of diagnostic systems. The methods must be able to handle dynamic systems with many sensors and discrete operating modes, with a particular focus on scalability, robustness, and practical implementability.

The performance and practical utility of the algorithms will be verified on real-world systems in close collaboration with our industrial partners.

As a PhD candidate, you will dedicate yourself to your doctoral education and the research project in which you are involved. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20% of full-time.

Your Qualifications

You have completed an advanced degree in computer science, mechatronics, electrical engineering, technical physics, applied mathematics, or a related field, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at an advanced level in the aforementioned subjects. Alternatively, you have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in another way. The degree requirement must be met by the time the employment decision is made, i.e., when the employment contract is signed.

We are looking for someone with a strong interest in high-quality research who is willing to meet challenges with perseverance and good problem-solving skills. To succeed in this role, you need to work in a structured manner, communicate clearly, and collaborate well. Since the doctoral education is conducted in an international environment, very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is required.

Selection for doctoral education is based on the assessed ability to benefit from the doctoral program. When filling the position, the following competencies will be particularly considered:

  • Relevant knowledge and skills for the thesis work, demonstrated through courses or projects at an advanced level in, for example, mathematical modeling, logic, algorithm development, programming, control theory, signal processing, machine learning, optimization, or analysis of dynamic systems.
  • Experience in algorithm development, particularly methods for diagnosis, state estimation, fault identification, or monitoring of dynamic systems, is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle technical and scientific problems.
  • Experience of working in environments with regular industrial contacts is an asset.

Your Workplace

The Division of Vehicle Systems conducts research as well as undergraduate and doctoral education in autonomous systems, electrification, battery systems, diagnostics and prognostics, as well as modeling and control of vehicle functions. About the Employment

In connection with the start of employment, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education here (https://liu.se/forskning/forskarutbildning).

The employment is limited to normally four years full-time. Extension of employment up to five years is based on the extent of teaching and departmental duties. In special cases, further extension may occur. You are initially employed for one year, and thereafter the employment is renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.
