Teaching Assistant in Adapted School
Are you driven by helping others develop and have an easy time building relationships with those around you? Are you the one who finds a way forward when faced with problems in everyday life? Do you enjoy a job that has a clear structure yet is different every day? Then we believe that the position of teaching assistant in an adapted school might be for you!
Your Responsibilities
As a teaching assistant in an adapted school, you work closely with our students and provide support throughout their school day, both pedagogically, practically, and socially. Through a good relationship, you support and provide security to our students so they can learn, develop, and make progress in their schooling and daily lives. Here, you will closely follow the students' development journey in school and rejoice in their progress together with both students and colleagues.
Adapted schools cater to students with intellectual disabilities. Since our students have significant individual variations in their abilities and support needs, your tasks and methods will vary both throughout the day and over time. Work in our organization is characterized by structure and predictability, while you also need to be flexible in how you meet the students. Therefore, you are expected to act with calmness and security while challenging the students to develop and find creative solutions to the challenges they may face.
Common Tasks Include:
- Clarifying the teacher's instructions during lessons, for example, by communicating through verbal explanations, signs, sensory stimulation, or visual aids.
- Supporting students during the school day under the teacher's guidance.
- Planning and driving the content of the after-school program together with colleagues.
- Assisting students with practical challenges during the day, such as bathroom visits/diaper changes, recess activities, during meals, meeting at the taxi, lifting, and transfers.
- Conducting lessons as needed, based on the teacher's planning.
- Supporting students in social interactions with others.
- Documenting the student's school day, either on behalf of the students or supporting them to do so, by taking photos and writing reflections.
- Following students' self-care plans, such as testing blood sugar, administering medication, and tube feeding.
- Participating in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of students' development.
- Supporting and preparing students for an independent life after school by documenting their school day.
The position may involve working dedicatedly with one student, with several students, or being available as support for all students in a classroom. You take independent responsibility for your tasks while all work is done together with colleagues, where you collectively do what is needed for the school day to function and for the students to feel good and thrive in school. You also collaborate with guardians and other actors in the school.
Your Workplace
We are looking for teaching assistants for Bäckskolan and Blästadsskolan's adapted primary school, located in Berga and Ekholmen, respectively, two schools where each student has the opportunity to develop according to their own conditions. As a teaching assistant, you, along with the after-school program coordinators, will be involved in planning, organizing, and driving the after-school program's activities.
In adapted schools, students with intellectual disabilities often attend, frequently in combination with multiple disabilities such as NPF, autism, visual impairment, hearing impairment, or physical movement disabilities. We combine an important educational mission with the care needs that exist. Our everyday life is built on an understanding that structure and clear routines are cornerstones for our students' security. Students study subjects and/or subject areas in smaller student groups with high staff density; in the classroom, there is often a teacher and several teaching assistants. There are ceiling lifts and other aids, but the most important tool is your presence and your ability to build relationships that create trust.
As an employee in an adapted school, you will have a fun and rewarding job that will challenge you, but you will also receive support and professional development. The work environment is characterized by close collaboration, and we support each other to solve the day's challenges. As a newcomer, you will receive an introduction, learn by shadowing your colleagues, and you will have a mentor. We continuously develop and adapt to our students' needs. We engage in ongoing professional development, including courses in AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) to strengthen your ability to communicate with all our students.
Working hours are from 06:00 to 18:00, and you will work on a schedule but are expected to be available during the operational hours.
Who You Are
We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in people and the ability to see each individual's strengths and abilities. You see opportunities where others may see obstacles or challenges. To succeed in this role, you need to maintain your calm and focus in intense situations and act controlled when conditions change. You should easily adapt your working methods according to the student's daily condition and see changes as a natural part of everyday life.
A completed upper secondary education is required. A good communicative ability in spoken and written Swedish is also required, as you need to organize and implement work according to the curriculum (Lgra22/Lgyan25) to support the student's language and communication development. Furthermore, you must be able to work physically, as lifting and transfers with aids are a natural part of everyday life.
Personality tests will be used as part of the selection process in this recruitment.
