Your Responsibilities
The research focus for this position is machine learning for wireless communication. The position is part of the project “Machine learning for sensing in distributed wireless systems,” conducted in collaboration between Linköping University (LiU) and Lund University (LU). Read more here: link (https://elliit.se/project/machine-learning-for-sensing-in-distributed-wireless-systems/).
Distributed MIMO systems (D-MIMO) are an emerging research direction that enables the development of communication systems with improved coverage, throughput, and stability. The project aims to utilize D-MIMO infrastructure and machine learning to perform real-time sensing, such as intrusion detection, fire detection, and other types of anomalies.
As a PhD student in this project, you will contribute to the development of new models and methods in machine learning for D-MIMO integrated sensing. This includes working with large amounts of data generated by a unique D-MIMO testbed at Lund University, generalizing existing models, and creating new deep learning-based models for anomaly detection, theoretical and numerical studies of detection quality, creating new distributed computation procedures, and optimizing communication costs. You will also contribute to the integration and testing of the models in real D-MIMO environments, in close collaboration with a PhD student at Lund University who specializes in wireless communication.
As a PhD student, you will focus on your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time.
Your Qualifications
You have a master's degree in machine learning, computer science, statistics, or a related field deemed relevant to the project's research focus, or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level in the aforementioned areas, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways.
Excellent academic results are required for the position. It is also advantageous if the applicant has a strong background in mathematics and statistics. The applicant should be skilled in implementing new models and algorithms in a suitable software environment, with documented experience, and with a good ability to calculate and optimize the complexity of algorithms. Experience in wireless communication and programming in Python is advantageous for the position. The applicant should also have a strong drive to solve real-world problems through fundamental research, the ability and interest to collaborate in research, and strong communication skills. The applicant must be able to communicate fluently in English, both spoken and written.
Your Workplace
You will be part of the research group within ELLIIT, which is a strategic research environment funded by the Swedish government. ELLIIT is distinguished by the quality and visibility of its publications and its ability to attract and retain top talent researchers. The research group consists of two senior researchers (in machine learning and wireless communication) and two PhD students: one PhD student is recruited through this announcement and the other through a similar announcement at Lund University (LU). The research in this project will utilize a unique D-MIMO testbed located at LU and the expertise of one of the world-leading MIMO researchers who is part of the research group: link (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/6736761).
Linköping University is one of the leading AI institutions in Sweden, and researchers in the project are connected to various prominent national AI initiatives and steering groups, such as ELLIIT, WASP, and the AI commission. The position is formally placed at the Department of Statistics and Machine Learning (STIMA) at the Department of Computer Science.
About the Position
Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education here.
The position is time-limited to normally four years full-time. Extension of the position up to five years occurs based on the degree of teaching and departmental assignments. In special cases, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.
Start date by agreement, but no later than August 15, 2026.
Salary and Benefits
The PhD salary is regulated based on a locally agreed salary scale. Read more about employee benefits here.
Union Contacts
Information about union contacts can be found in Help for Applicants.
Application
