At SMHI, we build technical solutions that help society understand and improve air quality. With us, you can combine modern software development with scientific models and data.

We are now looking for a model and/or system developer with an interest in air quality and atmospheric chemistry.

About us – Air Quality at SMHI

Within SMHI's area of operation for Air Quality, we develop systems and models for evaluating and monitoring air quality in Sweden and globally. Our solutions are used, among other things, to:

  • monitor and analyze air quality in our cities
  • produce Sweden's official emissions statistics
  • contribute to preparedness and decision support in cases such as nuclear accidents

We work with assignments for authorities and other actors and participate in projects aimed at improving the environment and health.

About the position

With us, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team where you work closely with both researchers and operational experts. Your role is to develop and maintain technical solutions – from data flows and model runs to analysis, optimization, and visualization.

The focus of the work is on programming and technical development, often in environments where large data sets, computationally intensive processes, and reliability requirements place high demands on code quality and performance.

The work also includes collaboration in technical projects with both internal and external parties. If necessary, you contribute with technical documentation and materials, as well as communicate technical solutions in various contexts, such as within networks or international collaborations.

We work in a Linux-based environment, with Python as the main programming language and PostgreSQL as the database. For user-facing components, web development is also involved.

About you

We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in technology, science, and societal benefit – preferably in complex environments where you can think both analytically and creatively.

For the position, you need to have:

  • a university degree in engineering or natural sciences, or equivalent competence that SMHI assesses as equivalent
  • several years of work experience in programming, preferably Python
  • very good knowledge of Swedish and good knowledge of English

Meritorious is knowledge and/or experience in:

  • programming in multiple languages as well as experience with version control, Linux, and databases
  • data visualization, such as web maps and GIS
  • technical project management
  • expertise in air quality

As a person, you are a good communicator – both verbally and in writing. The role involves working on several parallel projects, which requires good analytical and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to prioritize.

Welcome with your application!

Employment type: Permanent position

Location: The position is at SMHI's office in Norrköping. Your main workplace is at the office, but there is also the possibility to work from home when the operation allows.
