Are you studying law and curious about clerkship and work in the courts? Are you perhaps considering a future in the legal system? As a legal intern with us, you will gain insight into the various tasks of the district court and receive general training in practical law. Regardless of your future career plans, an internship at the district court is a valuable experience to understand the court process and the legal system as a whole.
Who are we
At Umeå District Court, over 80 people work, and it is a general court as well as one of five district courts in the country that serves as a land and environmental court. The general department of the court is administratively coordinated with the Rent and Lease Board in Umeå, which is one of eight boards in the country.
In the general department of the court, criminal cases, civil cases, court matters, and bankruptcies are handled. The land and environmental court handles, as the first instance, issues such as permits for environmentally hazardous activities and water operations, and reviews decisions according to, among other things, the Environmental Code, the Property Formation Act, and the Planning and Building Act.
We are now looking for legal interns for both periods during the autumn semester of 2026, for both the general department and the land and environmental court. Please indicate in your application which department you are interested in interning with.
The internship involves
The tasks as an intern largely correspond to those performed by newly hired clerks at the district court. In the general department, you will prepare cases and matters, take minutes during hearings, conduct legal research, and write proposals for judgments and decisions. In the land and environmental court, you will present cases, write proposals for judgments and decisions, and conduct legal research.
Application
Applicants should have completed at least 6 semesters of the law program. In your application, please attach your CV, transcripts from your law education, and a personal letter explaining why you want to intern with us and which department you are interested in. Also, indicate during which weeks you will be doing your internship.
Every day, hundreds of cases and matters are decided in courts across Sweden. Our organization consists of employees with various competencies, each of whom is significant in maintaining legal certainty and high quality at all levels.
