Environmental Protection Officer
Are you a natural scientist with experience in assessing water activities and protecting the natural environment? Now there is a unique opportunity to try working with exciting supervision within the defense sector. The Defense Inspectorate for Health and Environment is looking for an Environmental Protection Officer based at the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters in Stockholm. Together with other inspectors, you will contribute to ensuring that the Armed Forces' growth takes place with consideration for the natural environment in accordance with laws and regulations. In addition to exciting tasks, we offer good opportunities for professional development and three hours of training during working hours per week.
About the Defense Inspectorate for Health and Environment
The Defense Inspectorate for Health and Environment conducts supervision within the Armed Forces, the Fortifications Agency, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, and the Defence Radio Establishment. We are responsible for supervision over environmental and health protection, healthcare, infection control, as well as public control of food, animal by-products, feed, and animal welfare within the Armed Forces. When the Defense Inspectorate for Health and Environment exercises supervision and control, the inspector is not subordinate to the Supreme Commander.
Main Responsibilities
Together with three colleagues, you will work with assessments and supervision primarily according to Chapters 7, 11, and 12 of the Environmental Code. You will handle cases regarding assessments according to Chapter 12, Section 6 of the Environmental Code and reporting obligations for water activities within the defense sector. The work also includes providing comments to other authorities and supporting other matters within the department regarding nature and water issues. Your work includes independently planning and conducting inspections, making assessments based on legal support, and writing decisions and statements. The work also includes supervision according to the national supervision strategy and the water directive. Together with colleagues, you are expected to drive and develop the supervision work within the area. Since supervision is conducted throughout Sweden, travel is included in the position.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
- Degree from a relevant multi-year academic program in natural sciences with a focus on biology, ecology, or other education deemed equivalent by the employer
- Current and relevant experience in supervision according to the Environmental Code
- Good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in Swedish
- Good knowledge of MS Office
- Driver's license

You are meticulous and have good analytical and administrative skills. You have experience and a good ability to meet people in different environments. DESIRABLE
- Knowledge of the defense sector's operations
- Current and relevant experience in handling water activities
- Current and relevant experience in handling nature protection cases
- Current and relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: the water directive, species protection regulation, invasive alien species, area protection according to the Environmental Code

At the Headquarters, the Supreme Commander and the Director General are located. The Headquarters has approximately 1,000 employees – both professional officers and civilian experts. As of 2023-01-01, the Headquarters consists of the Defense Staff, Operations Management, Military Intelligence and Security Service, as well as the Headquarters' Staff Department and independent supervisory units.
Employment with us means placement in a security class. Usually, Swedish citizenship is required.
