Postdoctoral Researcher in Climate Science

The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and teaching spanning the atmosphere, ocean, and physically based climate science.

We offer educational programs at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. Our research seeks answers to fundamental questions about the dynamic, physical, chemical, and biogeochemical properties of the atmosphere and oceans that are relevant to weather and climate. The research activities are broad and encompass processes ranging from the deep ocean to the upper atmosphere, and from the tropics to the poles. We utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interplay with observations. Furthermore, the department develops and leads observational-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and land-based instruments.

MISU is part of a larger research environment at the university, including the Bolin Center for Climate Research, the Baltic Sea Center, and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre. The department is an international workplace, and over half of the staff have a background outside of Sweden. More information about us can be found on our website (https://www.su.se/meteorologiska-institutionen/).

Project Description

Anthropogenic aerosol particles can interact with tropical deep convective clouds and thereby contribute to the effective radiative forcing of climate change. However, the physical mechanisms of these aerosol-cloud interactions are not well understood, and the associated radiative forcing has not been carefully quantified. This EU ERC-funded project Aerosols, Convection, Clouds, and Climate Sensitivity (AC3S) aims to improve the mechanistic understanding of the interactions between anthropogenic aerosols and tropical convective clouds and to quantify the associated radiative forcing.

Job Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of a research group studying aerosol-cloud interactions using climate models that allow for convection, satellite data, field observations, and statistical methods to estimate climate impact and sensitivity. The postdoctoral researcher will primarily investigate the relative importance of different physical mechanisms that govern the interactions between aerosols and tropical deep convective clouds. This may involve performing simulations with a climate model that allows for convection or analyzing satellite data. The postdoctoral researcher will be able to shape the project in collaboration with the project leaders within the general framework of the project.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to dedicate at least 75% of their working time to AC3S. There is the possibility to dedicate up to 25% of the working time to a project of their own design within atmospheric or climate science. It is also possible to dedicate 100% of the working time to AC3S if desired. If you wish to pursue your own project for up to 25% of the working time, please attach a project/research plan.

Eligibility Requirements

A postdoctoral researcher is defined as an employee who is primarily hired for research and who has obtained a doctoral degree or has a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree.

Assessment Criteria

The doctoral degree should be in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography, or a related field. The degree must have been obtained no later than when the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, union duties, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the subject area.

In the appointment process, special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence within the general area of the announced position.

The applicant is expected to have good collaborative skills and excellent oral and written proficiency in English.

About the Employment

The position is full-time and is permanent, but for at least two years and at most three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date is 2025-04-01 or according to agreement.

Contact

Inquiries about the position can be made to Assistant Professor Casey Wall, [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]).

Inquiries about the recruitment process and employment conditions can be made to the administrative manager, Sara Engström, [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]).

Application

You apply for the position via Stockholm University's recruitment system. Attach a personal letter and CV as well as the requested documents in the application form. As an applicant, you are responsible for ensuring that the application is complete and that it reaches the university no later than the application deadline.
