Job Responsibilities
Modern ion batteries are based on the charging of ions, primarily Li-ions, in carbon and/or SiOx-based materials that constitute the negative electrode.
The battery's properties such as energy density and aging depend in a complex way on the material structure and specifically on the environment of the ions. NMR spectroscopy can directly observe ions being charged in the electrode material, and the spectrum and other NMR parameters such as relaxation times provide information about the atomic and electronic environment. The work in this project focuses on experimental studies of suitably prepared (charging, aging) electrode materials primarily using NMR spectroscopy.
