Subject and Project Description
Dual Control at Scale: Learning-based control for systems with millions of states is funded by an ERC Advanced Grant, a prestigious international research grant aimed at enabling groundbreaking research in the long term. The project focuses on learning-based control engineering for high-dimensional data. Applications for personalized immunotherapy for cancer are also addressed. The grant funds two postdoctoral researchers and several PhD students with complementary skills. In this call, we are looking for a mathematically oriented PhD student with expertise in systems theory and control engineering.
Dynamics of large-scale socio-technical networks is funded by the Swedish Research Council and the strategic research area ELLIIT. Here, we study large-scale systems where human agents interact with AI agents (such as chatbots and LLMs or automated decision-makers) and/or technical network systems (such as energy or traffic networks). We use methods from control engineering and systems theory combined with graph theory and/or data analysis to understand these complex network dynamics, optimize them, and ensure safety and robustness.
Responsibilities
You will primarily focus on your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral education courses, seminars, and conferences.
The main task for a PhD student is to engage in their doctoral education.
The PhD position consists of three main parts, and the responsibilities include:
- research projects, including writing articles, traveling to conferences, seminars, etc.
- doctoral education courses, local, national, as well as international courses (90 credits)
- teaching (max 20% of working hours), including lab supervision, exam responsibility, and development work. This part also includes departmental duties, e.g., work on diversity and equal treatment, organizing events at the department, etc.

- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.
Specific Eligibility for Control Engineering
You meet the specific eligibility for control engineering if you have:
knowledge equivalent to “FRTF05 Control Engineering, general course (previously FRT010)”, as well as a specialization at the master's level relevant to the subject area, and a master's degree in engineering or equivalent competence.
Other Requirements
To benefit from the current doctoral education, the following is also required:
- very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
