Job Responsibilities

The doctoral education comprises 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies).

The education concludes with the doctoral student defending their doctoral thesis at a public defense. The person employed as a doctoral student will receive a salary from the university for four years and will primarily focus on their own doctoral education.

Institutional duties of up to 20 percent of full-time may occur, mainly in the form of teaching, whereby the employment is extended correspondingly. The doctoral student is expected to be present at the department and actively participate in the research and teaching environment. The working language in the doctoral education is primarily English. However, non-Swedish-speaking doctoral students are expected to acquire basic skills in Swedish during their employment period. Opportunities to participate in language instruction at Lund University are available.

The position as a doctoral student is to commence on 2026-09-01.

Eligibility

To be admitted to doctoral education https://www.uhr.se/studier-och-antagning/tilltrade-till-hogskolan/Hogskoleforordningen/ (https://www.uhr.se/studier-och-antagning/tilltrade-till-hogskolan/Hogskoleforordningen/), the applicant must (1) have basic eligibility and any specific eligibility that the university may have prescribed, and (2) be assessed to have the ability required to benefit from doctoral education (SFS 2010:1064). Basic eligibility for education at the doctoral level is held by those who have:

  • 1) completed a degree at the advanced level,
  • 2) fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level,
  • 3) or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country.

Specific eligibility for admission to doctoral education in social anthropology is held by those who have completed a degree at the advanced level in social anthropology or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country.

Assessment Criteria

Only those who are admitted to doctoral education may be appointed to the position of doctoral student. In the admission process, particular attention will be paid to the degree of ability to benefit from the doctoral education. Ranking of applicants will be based on a comprehensive assessment of the quality of submitted thesis works and submitted research plans, as well as personal suitability.

Since doctoral studies in social anthropology are very demanding, the applicant must be strongly motivated and able to work independently under time pressure. Good collaboration and communication skills are also required, as well as good knowledge of English in both spoken and written forms.

Interviews will be conducted with a limited selection of applicants in the final stages of the admission process. Applicants may be asked for work samples even after the application has been submitted.

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted electronically via Lund University's application portal. The application must include:

  • An introductory letter in English, comprising a maximum of 1,000 words, containing a brief presentation of yourself as an applicant and your qualifications, as well as a brief description of why you are interested in the doctoral education in social anthropology at the Department of Sociology, Lund University.
  • A CV in Swedish or English showing eligibility for doctoral education in social anthropology.
  • Degree and transcript documents in Swedish or English.
  • Master's thesis or equivalent work in Swedish or English, corresponding to at least 30 higher education credits in sociology or another subject deemed equivalent.
  • A research plan of no more than 13,000 characters including spaces and references, in English. Conditions

Fixed-term employment for four years according to HF Chapter 5, Section 7.
