Assistant Professor in Literary Studies with a Focus on Medical Humanities

We are looking for an Assistant Professor in Literary Studies with a focus on Medical Humanities, 100%, based at the Centre for Languages and Literature.
Workplace and Subject Environment
The Literary Studies section at the Centre for Languages and Literature is part of the Department of Literary Studies, Film Studies, Dramaturgy, and the Writers' School. The subject has a large teaching staff and doctoral candidates and offers a wide range of courses from undergraduate to master's level as well as doctoral education (Literary Studies | Centre for Languages and Literature). Teaching in medical humanities with a focus on literature is conducted in, among others, the Medical Program in Lund (Education | Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities).
The field of Literary Studies has a vibrant research environment with an active seminar program. Based on a broad palette of methods and theoretical perspectives, research primarily focuses on Swedish and Nordic literature from the 17th century to the present (Literary Research | Centre for Languages and Literature). The subject's placement at the Centre for Languages and Literature offers good opportunities for collaboration with other subjects. The field of medical humanities includes research in literary studies and narrative medicine, as well as interdisciplinary research in collaboration with researchers from various subjects and faculties (Staff | Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities).

As an Assistant Professor at Lund University, you will qualify for promotion to a permanent position as a university lecturer. Within your employment, you will be offered a mentor and higher education pedagogical training of at least five weeks.

Job Responsibilities
This assistant professorship within the project Narrative Medicine – Stories and Storytelling in Medical Education and Clinical Practice (Millions for Narrative Medicine – Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities) primarily involves research and teaching. You will contribute to and develop research in literary studies in general and in medical humanities with a focus on literature in particular. The emphasis is on research qualification with the support of a mentor.
You will operate in a literary studies environment with interdisciplinary contacts, in close collaboration with the Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities at the Faculty of Medicine. You will primarily teach literature in several of the medical program's courses such as professional development, medicine as humanities, and deepening perspectives through literature, film, art, and music. You will also supervise theses at the bachelor's and master's levels of the medical program, participate in other professional programs, and contribute to teaching development.
Teaching will take place in Lund, Malmö, and Helsingborg. The language of instruction is Swedish.
Qualifications
In the first instance, we will prioritize applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree after March 2, 2019. If there are documented special reasons, such as parental leave, military service, or illness after graduation that have hindered you from working as a researcher, this time may be deducted from the time elapsed since obtaining the doctoral degree.
Requirements for the position include:
- PhD in Literary Studies or equivalent scientific competence relevant to the subject matter and the job responsibilities
- Strong ability to develop and conduct high-quality research
- Pedagogical ability
- Good collaboration skills
- Ability to teach in Swedish or another Scandinavian language from the first day of employment
Meritorious for the position are:
- Research relevant to the fields of medical humanities or narrative medicine
- Documented experience in teaching within the field of medical humanities

Fixed-term employment, 4 years, according to Chapter 4, Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, with the possibility of promotion to a permanent position as a university lecturer.

The Faculty of Humanities and Theology has eight departments and conducts a large and varied operation in research and education. We have about 700 employees and about 4,000 full-year students.
About the Centre for Languages and Literature
The Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL) is Sweden's largest institution focused on languages, linguistics, literary studies, and area studies. SOL offers approximately 500 independent courses complemented by a growing number of program offerings at the undergraduate and advanced levels. With its 36 subjects and about 30 doctoral programs, SOL forms a solid unit with breadth and depth in education and research and is characterized by both national and international visibility. SOL is led by a board where the head is the chairperson. In addition, there are three deputy heads with specific operational responsibilities. SOL has approximately 300 employees and 8,000 students, of which about a hundred are doctoral students.
