PhD Position in Perennial Cropping Systems
Do you want to contribute to the development of innovative perennial cropping systems that support more sustainable and resilient agriculture? Do you thrive in a multidisciplinary and international research environment?
If so, this PhD position at the Department of Plant Production Ecology, SLU Uppsala, could be an exciting next step for you.
Department of Plant Production Ecology
The Department of Plant Production Ecology is part of the Ecological Center and, together with the Department of Ecology, offers a stimulating research environment. We develop knowledge about resilient and sustainable plant production systems to meet the demands for quantity and quality regarding food, animal feed, and bio-based raw materials in a changing world. The research focuses on the challenges arising from increased demand, climate change, environmental impact, and loss of biodiversity related to agricultural and food systems. Teaching is conducted at both undergraduate and advanced levels, primarily within programs leading to degrees in agronomy and biology.

Perennial Cropping Systems
Research Subject: Crop Science
Project Description:
Perennial cropping systems have great potential to reduce the environmental footprint of agriculture and improve long-term productivity. Many of today's annual cropping systems contribute to soil erosion, nutrient leaching into waterways, greenhouse gas emissions, reduced biodiversity, and increased vulnerability to climate extremes, such as drought. Perennial crops and pastures, on the other hand, can reduce the need for inputs, mitigate environmental impacts, and enhance resilience to climate variations. However, managing perennial systems presents unique challenges, particularly regarding weed control.
In Europe, perennial crops often involve mixtures of clover and grass for fodder, while perennial cereal crops are gaining increasing interest. Despite their potential, there are significant knowledge gaps regarding the physiology, productivity, and cultivation methodology of perennial crops, especially perennial cereals.
To develop robust and sustainable cropping systems with perennial crops, research is needed on the agroecological mechanisms that drive yield and resilience, as well as close collaboration with farmers who are already using these systems.
As a PhD student in this project, you will work with field trials both at research stations and on farms, as well as with data processing and writing. You will also take courses at the doctoral level, participate in international conferences, and have the opportunity to develop your network across various academic disciplines and among other stakeholders.
