The Faculty of Languages at Uppsala University conducts teaching and research in several classical and contemporary languages and cultures, as well as linguistics and language technology. This diversity of linguistic, literary, and cultural orientations forms a core of humanities research and also lays a sustainable foundation for fruitful collaborations within the faculty, as well as with other scientific fields and society at large.
Doctoral studies extend over a 4-year period during which the doctoral candidate receives a salary as an employee of the department. The doctoral candidate is expected to conduct studies and research full-time and participate in and contribute to the department's activities. Teaching and/or administrative duties may be added up to 20%, in which case the doctoral position will be extended accordingly.
The Department of Linguistics and Philology conducts research and education in linguistics and text studies focusing on the languages and cultures of Asia, classical languages of Europe, linguistics, and computational linguistics. Education is offered at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The department has about seventy employees, who together with students and partners create an international and intellectually vibrant environment.
Job Responsibilities
The main task of the doctoral candidate is to conduct research within a chosen subject, under the supervision of advisors and in collaboration with other researchers. The doctoral studies will be conducted within the framework of one of the department's doctoral training programs focusing on language documentation and description. We welcome projects that make a significant contribution to increasing our knowledge of underdocumented languages, underdocumented language varieties, or underdocumented aspects of otherwise well-known languages. Projects may be field-based, use existing resources, or employ innovative computational methods to collect data. Projects that involve methodological and theoretical innovation will be positively evaluated.
Qualifications
- Eligible for doctoral education is one who has obtained a master's degree in linguistics, or completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or in some other way acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.
- Meet the specific eligibility requirements stated in the general study plan for doctoral education at the institution that best matches the applicant's competence and research plan.
- Have documented knowledge in linguistic typology, philology, computational linguistics, field linguistics, and/or language description/documentation relevant to the proposed project.
Desirable/meritorious
- Experience demonstrating that it is feasible for the applicant to carry out the proposed doctoral project, such as fieldwork or a pilot study.
- Analytical strength in language description, as evidenced by written work.

About the employment
The employment is temporary, according to HF Chapter 5 § 7. The extent is full-time. Start date: September 1, 2026, or by agreement. Place of employment: Uppsala.
