The Centre for Geometry and Physics at Uppsala University is one of the excellence centers of the Swedish Research Council, operated by the Department of Mathematics and the Division of Theoretical Physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Currently, there are several employed researchers, postdocs, and PhD students at the two departments who are active within the center. The center is expanding and will hire assistant professors in mathematics and theoretical physics. We are now seeking an assistant professor in mathematics and/or mathematical physics based at the Department of Mathematics. The position is intended to bridge the two areas. We are looking for a candidate with a research profile that fits well into the existing research group at the center.

The position comes with resources for travel, guest invitations, equipment, and support for hiring PhD students.

Description of the subject area of the position

The subject areas are mathematics and/or mathematical physics. Particularly relevant areas include differential, symplectic and algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, representation theory, enumerative geometry, low-dimensional topology, as well as mathematical aspects of string theory and quantum field theory. The candidate will be employed at the Department of Mathematics but is expected to work across departmental boundaries.

Responsibilities

• Teaching, research, and administration. Teaching includes course responsibility and course administration as well as supervision of PhD students.
• Follow developments in the own subject area and societal developments that are relevant to the work at the university.
• The position may include administrative tasks within the Centre for Geometry and Physics.
• Actively apply for and obtain external research grants.

Employment period

The position as an assistant professor can be held for a maximum of six years. The position as an assistant professor aims at qualification for a teaching position for which higher requirements for eligibility are set. An assistant professor can apply for promotion to associate professor. If the assistant professor is deemed suitable and meets the requirements for promotion, he or she will be promoted and permanently employed as an associate professor.

All qualifications must be documented so that both quality and extent can be assessed.

The university will primarily consider those who, after a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skill, are deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop the relevant tasks and contribute to a positive development of the operations.

Additional information

Parental leave, part-time work due to childcare, union duties, military service, or similar will be considered as work experience and should be indicated in the CV.
