The Department of History of Ideas at Uppsala University currently has around 60 employed teachers, researchers, and doctoral students.

Education is conducted at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The department as a whole exhibits a wide range of research areas, such as the history of science, the history of medicine, political thought history, intellectual history, educational history, as well as cultural history and media history. More information about the Department of History of Ideas and its activities can be found at Department of History of Ideas – Uppsala University (https://idehist.uu.se).

The field of the history of science has long held a strong position at the department, and today we have several researchers and teachers working on themes related to the history of science in both research and teaching. To further strengthen this environment, we are now announcing the Hans Rausing Professorship in the History of Science. The professorship was established in 2001 through a donation from Lisbet Rausing.

Description of the Subject Area of the Position

The announcement pertains to research and teaching in the field of the history of ideas, with a particular focus on the history of science.

Job Responsibilities

The holder of the position will conduct independent research in the field of the history of ideas, preferably within the field of the history of science. The holder's responsibilities include initiating, planning, and leading larger research projects, as well as actively applying for research funding for both their own and others' research. An additional responsibility included in the position is teaching and supervision at all levels of education. Furthermore, the holder is expected to collaborate with external actors and inform about their activities in a broader context outside the department. In their research activities, the holder is also expected to collaborate with researchers at the department who conduct research in fields other than the history of science. The holder of the position should also be prepared to take on various types of leadership assignments both at the departmental level and at other levels within Uppsala University. Administration is included in the position. The research component normally accounts for about 50% of the position (including research administration); teaching, supervision, and course development account for the remaining 50% (including teaching administration).

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible for appointment as a professor is one who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical competence (HF 4 chap. 3 §). Scientific competence must have been demonstrated through independent research efforts within the subject area of the announcement. It is required that the pedagogical competence, scientific competence, and professional competence are relevant to the subject matter of the position and the tasks that will be included in the position.

The applicant must have completed university pedagogical training relevant to the university's activities, comprising ten weeks, or have acquired equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the pedagogical training may be completed during the first two years of employment. To be considered as a supervisor for doctoral students, completion of supervisor training is required.

For eligibility, documented ability to teach and administer in Swedish and English is required. Those who do not have the ability to teach and administer in Swedish are expected to be able to use Swedish as a working language within two years. Additionally, a general eligibility requirement for teachers is that the applicant must possess the personal qualities required to perform the position well (such as collaboration skills, flexibility, responsibility, and the ability to lead groups and courses).

Assessment Criteria for Applicants Who Meet the Eligibility Requirements

In the selection among eligible applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific competence and leadership skills. Pedagogical competence and administrative skills will also be given weight.

All merits must be documented so that both quality and extent can be assessed.

The university will primarily consider those who, after a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skills, are deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop the relevant tasks and contribute to a positive development of the activities.

Employment Procedure

All merits must be documented so that both quality and extent can be assessed. The application must include the following:
