PhD Position in Regulatory Science
The Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences is an interdisciplinary environment where 10 research areas work to contribute to better medicines and a healthier world.
With laboratories in the heart of Uppsala Biomedical Center and Sweden's only Faculty of Pharmacy, we are a vital engine in the development of education and research within the pharmaceutical sciences. More information about the department and its activities can be found at http://www.uu.se/farmbio (http://www.uu.se/farmbio).
The announced PhD position is linked to the Graduate School in Regulatory Science, a new initiative at the Faculty of Pharmacy. Regulatory science can be defined as the science of developing and applying new tools, standards, and methods to assess the safety, efficacy, quality, and performance of products regulated by governmental or international authorities. The Graduate School aims to establish and then strengthen the faculty's role as a leading competence center by educating PhDs with integrated research and regulatory expertise in strategic collaborations with authorities, industry, and international research environments. The long-term goal is to contribute to ensuring that the population has access to safe and effective medicines.
Job Responsibilities
The PhD project will extensively address regulatory scientific aspects of tablet splitting from the perspective of rational formulation, quality control, and physiologically based biopharmaceutical modeling (PBBM), focusing on drugs with a narrow therapeutic window (NTI). Clinically, individualized treatments involving off-label use and dose adjustment of NTI drugs present complex regulatory challenges, especially for vulnerable populations such as children, where physiological variation and ethical considerations limit traditional randomized clinical trials (RCT). Special attention will be given to special patient groups where dose manipulations are common, to achieve evidence-based understanding of risk management strategies.
Eligibility Requirements
To meet the eligibility requirements for doctoral education, you must have:
- a master's degree in a relevant field for the project, such as pharmacy, or a similar area that includes education in drug development, or completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 at an advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 credits.
- proficiency in English, both spoken and written; personal suitability, motivation, and interest in – as well as experience with – research in the formulation of solid oral dosage forms and quality control are considered merits.
- basic knowledge in pharmacokinetics and modeling, particularly in Open Systems Pharmacology Suite (PK-Sim/MoBi, R-packages), is meritorious.
More information about the eligibility requirements can be found here (https://www.uu.se/medarbetare/vetenskapsomrade/medicin-och-farmaci/utbildning-och-undervisning/utbildning-pa-forskarniva).
The selection of applicants is made by the supervisor in consultation with the department's doctoral education group. The doctoral education committee within the field of medicine-pharmacy will admit the PhD candidate. The selection is based on the qualifications mentioned above, grades in relevant courses, the relevance of the courses to the research area, previous experience of work and research in the area described above. An integrated assessment will be made to hire the most suitable candidate who can succeed in the doctoral education and contribute to a positive development of the research program. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as analytical ability, accuracy, flexibility, and teamwork.
