Subject Area Description
The subject includes epidemiology, toxicology, ergonomics, risk communication, and preventive measures regarding the relationship between health and illness in relation to the work environment, outdoor environment, and home environment.
Job Responsibilities
The job responsibilities include research, teaching, clinical service, and administration. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration, and supervision of doctoral students. The holder is also responsible for following the developments in their own field. One-third of the position consists of clinical work as a specialist physician in the area of occupational and environmental medicine.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligible for appointment as a professor is a person who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical proficiency (HF Chapter 4, Section 3). According to the Employment Ordinance for Uppsala University (AO), the general eligibility requirement for teachers is to have the personal qualities necessary to perform the position well (AO § 5).
Scientific proficiency must be demonstrated through independent research efforts and the candidate's qualifications must hold very high quality in an international perspective.
Pedagogical proficiency must be demonstrated through extensive qualifications in education (see AO § 22). Furthermore, the candidate must show well-documented proficiency in supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. A prerequisite for pedagogical proficiency to be considered is completion of relevant higher education pedagogical training, covering at least ten weeks, or equivalent knowledge.
Eligibility for this position requires a medical degree and specialist competence in occupational and environmental medicine.
Assessment Criteria
In the selection among eligible applicants, emphasis will primarily be placed on scientific proficiency and subsequently on pedagogical proficiency. However, a comprehensive assessment will be made so that an applicant with a significant advantage in pedagogical proficiency may be ranked ahead of an applicant with a slight advantage in scientific proficiency. Clinical proficiency as well as leadership and collaboration are also significant for the position and will be weighted accordingly.
Assessment Criteria, Other Skills
Administrative skills and leadership skills are important for the position and will be weighted. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community as well as to inform about research and development work will be taken into account.
Administrative skills are demonstrated, among other things, by the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work effectively and in a manner suited to the purpose, as well as by the ability to set and adhere to deadlines.
Leadership skills are demonstrated by the ability to lead operations and staff, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate and provide others with the conditions necessary to effectively achieve common goals.
In a comprehensive assessment of the applicants' qualifications, parental leave, part-time work due to childcare, union duties, military service, or similar will be considered as work experience (94 § AO).
When the university is to hire new teachers, the applicants will be selected based on a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skills, deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop the current tasks and contribute to a positive development of the operations (4 § AO).
The gender equality aspect will be applied in hiring if, after a qualitative assessment, it turns out that two applicants of different genders have equivalent or nearly equivalent qualifications and if either gender is underrepresented (constituting less than 40% within the current position category and at the current workplace) (95 § AO).
All qualifications must be documented so that both quality and extent can be assessed.
In the assessment of submitted applications, international experts may be consulted. In this event, application documents written in Swedish may need to be sent to a translator hired by the university. Therefore, it is advantageous to submit the application in English.
